  2. NJASK GOALS 2010 • To measure and promote student achievement of challenging state curriculum standards • To provide accurate and meaningful information about student performance • To meet state and federal accountability requirements

  3. What’s New? • Calculator Use Policy • Dates of Test : May 10, May 11, May 12, May 13 • Make ups the following week**Students must arrive on time to take the test, if test has begun students will have to make up that portion of the test during make up week

  4. LAL: Language Arts Literacy-READING • Three Reading Passages • Will Include • Literature • Every day Reading • Wide array of sources and genre • Field test questions

  5. Writing • Student is required to respond in a variety of modes and forms • Speculative : a briefly described situation that students are asked to respond with a narrative with which the student may use their imagination • Explanatory: In responding to the quotation or essay topic presented, students will be asked to explain their point of view and to create an original work. Explanatory writing may be based on the writer’s personal knowledge and experience or on information presented to the writer.

  6. Writing continued • Expository: a piece of writing that informs someone about a particular subject. It can be written as a comparison, descriptive essay, classification or a cause and effect. • Persuasive: is a selection such as an essay or article to persuade the reader to believe their point of view on a specific topic.

  7. Test Design • Two Writing Tasks-30 minutes each-20 points Scored by 5 Point Rubric • Three Reading Tasks-30 minutes each-42 points • Multiple Choice : 30 questions • Open Ended : 3 questions • **4 Point Rubric** • Total Points 62

LAL : What to expect in writing Prompts • The Speculative prompt will give a brief scenario and then the student will use what they know or have read to develop ideas fro a composition • The Expository will have two formats: • 1. Introduce a brief verbal prompt and ask a student to develop a composition • 2. Use a poem to introduce a topic which will be elaborated by a brief verbal prompt that a student uses as a basis to 1. Describe 2. Discuss 3. Explain their topic

  9. NJASK Math • Updated Calculator Use Policy • The Short Constructed Response (SCR) part of test will be non-calculator active for all students • Calculators will be permitted on three of the five remaining parts. These parts include multiple choice and extended constructed response items.

  10. NJASK Math test Design • Multiple Choice 33 questions • Short Constructed Response 8 questions • Extended Constructed response 3 questions • Approximate time 136 minutes

NJASK Grade 5 Sample SCR Items • Standard 4.1.5 B 3 • Use an efficient and accurate paper and pencil procedure for division of a 3-digit number by a 2-digit number • Example: A gallon contains 128 ounces. Tim wants to divide 3 gallons of kool aid equally among the 2 dozen friends at his party. How many ounces of kool aid will each friend receive? 128 x 3 = n n /24= 16

  13. How to interpret NJASK Test Scores • ISR- Individual Student Reports Identifies areas of proficiency in LA, Math and Science (grade 4 only) Advanced Proficient = 250 - 300 Proficient = 200 - 249 Partially Proficient = 100 - 199

NJASK Miscellaneous • How many questions does a student need to get a 200 or proficient score on the NJASK? 55% • In 2011 79% of students must pass LAL • In Math in 2011 83% of students must pass • The Dr. Joyanne D. Miller School passed the NJASK LAL and Math in school year 2008-2009 4th and 5th grade

  15. How to prepare for the test • The teachers and students are preparing daily for the NJASK test by following the pacing guides whaich are designed to fulfill the skills needed for the NJASK test • The day before the test please make sure your child gets a good nights rest • Make sure your child has a healthy breakfast the days of the testing • Send in a snack and a refreshment if you can • Keep stress to a minimum the week of testing: No homework will be assigned
