What’s the Hype About? • In 2004, President Bush called for “the majority of Americans to have interoperable electronic health records within 10 years”. • Dr. David Brailer was named the first national coordinator and the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) for Health Information Technology was established. • In February 2009, President Obama signed the HITECH Act as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). This legislation provided $17.2 billion to providers to move forward with EHR adoption.

Digging Deeper The ONC now has five strategic goals; • Achieve Adoption and Information Exchange through Meaningful Use of Health IT • Improve Care, Improve Population Health, and Reduce Health Care Costs through the Use of Health IT • Inspire Confidence and Trust in Health IT • Empower Individuals with Health IT to Improve their Health and the Health Care System • Achieve Rapid Learning and Technological Advancement

  4. ONC Programs The ONC’s programs include; Health IT Adoption programs • Regional Extension Centers • Workforce Development Program • Consumer e-Health Program • State Health Information Exchange Programs • And more!

Where are we going? • Improve our Country’s health • Identify safety issues • Detect epidemics • Improve overall healthcare • Better information means better healthcare • Interoperability – • This is the ultimate outcome • Check out the courses at the ONC’s website • http://www.healthit.gov/providers-professionals/interoperability-training-courses

  6. Certification • Certification ensures that the EHR technology providers choose to adopt offers the necessary technological capability, functionality, and security to help them achieve meaningful use. • Eligible health care providers must use certified EHR technology to qualify for incentive payments.

  7. Health Information Exchange • Health Information Exchange allows health care professionals and patients to appropriately access and securely share a patient’s vital medical information electronically. There are many health care delivery scenarios driving the technology behind the different forms of health information exchange available today. 1 • HIE, HIX – two different things! 1. http://www.healthit.gov/
