  3. Location • Cambodia is found on the Indochina Peninsula in Southeast Asia. • It borders Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and the Gulf of Thailand. • The absolute location of Cambodia is 13 N and 105 E.

  4. General Information • Cambodia is officially known as the Kingdom of Cambodia. • The capital of Cambodia is Phnom Penh. • As of 2010, Cambodia had a population of about 14,139,000. • Cambodia has a landmass of 181,035 square kilometers, which is about the same size as Missouri.

  5. Health & Education • Life expectancy of people in Cambodia: • Males: 59 years old • Females: 63 years old • Infant mortality rate: 58 deaths for every 1,000 births • Only 6% of people graduate from university • Literacy rate: 75.1%

  6. Language • The official language of Cambodia is Khmer. • In Khmer, Cambodia is known as Kampuchea. • The Kingdom of Cambodia is known as Preahreacheanachakr Kampuchea.

Government • Cambodia has a Constitutional Monarchy. • A Constitutional Monarchy has a monarch who is limited by a constitution. • The constitution can be a written, uncodified, or blended constitution. • A Constitutional Monarchy is different from an Absolute Monarchy, which lets the monarch regulate his/her own government.

  10. People • About 84% of the people in Cambodia are farmers. • Most people travel by using mopeds. • Almost 1/3 of the population makes less than $1 a day.

  15. Angkor Wat • Largest Hindu temple in the world • Dedicated to Vishnu • Later became a Buddhist temple • Built by King Suryavarman II during the 12th century • Major tourist attraction and is the cause for about 50% of tourists

Khmer Rouge • The Khmer Rouge was led by Pol Pot after the Vietnam War in 1975. • Pol Pot forced people to leave the cities and work at rural projects on the countryside. • About 1/3 of the population was killed due to execution, overwork, starvation, and disease. • Large areas where people were killed and buried were called Killing Fields.

  17. Khmer Rouge (cont.) • The most popular prison during Khmer Rouge was Security Prison 21, also known as TuolSleng. • Only 7 out of 17,000 people survived in TuolSleng. • Children were taken away from their parents and were taught torture methods using animals as demonstrations.

Khmer Rouge (cont.) • Anyone who showed signs of urbanism or intellectualism was killed. • Anyone who wore glasses was killed because it was sign of education • Pol Pot preferred traditional medicinal techniques rather than modern medicine, which caused more people to die • Motto: “To keep you is no benefit. To destroy you is no loss.”
