  1. All-Hazard Mitigation Planning Forums Working with Data

  2. What Data is Required? • No “golden list” of required data from FEMA • Local Planning Assistance Center’s data matrix • Updated November, 2003 - reviewed by FEMA staff • http://www.lpa.state.mn.us/HazardMitigation/index.html

  3. Land and Boundaries Data

  4. Facilities and Infrastructure Data

  5. Population Data

  6. Climate Based Data

  7. What format: GIS, tabular, maps • What are you showing? • Repetitive loss structures • Is location important for your data set? • Floodplains • Statewide tornado counts • Is statistical/tabular information important? • % of the total population

  8. Past hazard events http://www4.ncdc.noaa.gov/cgi-win/wwcgi.dll?wwevent~storms

  9. Additional climate information http://www4.ncdc.noaa.gov/cgi-win/wwcgi.dll?wwevent~storms

  10. Data considerations • Verify state data sets • Are they accurate? • Do you need additional attribute information?

  11. Techniques for supplementing state data • Gathering • Entering • Documenting

  12. Collect from others –data available • State Agencies – MNDOT, LMIC, DNR, Health, PCA, DATANET • County assessor

  13. Entering information into a GIS • Heads-up digitizing allows you to enter data into a GIS • GPS • Accuracy varies • Does it matter?

  14. Assemble base information • Create basemaps for each city and townships using highway maps • Outline major roads using Basemap 2001 created by MNDOT • Add points for data collected • Data can be entered in GIS

  15. 2003 FSA Aerial Photography http://www.lmic.state.mn.us/chouse/airphoto_usda.html

  16. Hazard Mitigation Planning

  17. Natural features

  18. Internet • Use business directories to locate information by category

  19. Point Collection with GPS • Some points must be collected by hand. • Old photos • New points • Places tough to identify on maps

  20. Collecting attribute information • What attributes? • What’s is it? How many? Why is it important? • Structure type, address, phone number, contact name, key resources • Ex. Cherry Creek fire station, 111 Dalmation Drive, Contact: Bob Olson, (320)123-4567, 6 fire trucks,1 hovercraft, 12 crew members.

  21. What’s new in EPICplanner? • Heads-up digitizing • Add a new layer • Add new points to an existing layer. • GPS utility • Uses Waypoint software • Connects to Garmin GPS receivers

  22. Don’t duck metadata!!!What are Metadata Used For? • Managing databases • Comparing data sets • Facilitating data sharing • Providing technical specs • Finding data • Create metadata DURING your project • When you create new data • When you change existing data • If you leave metadata until the end, it rarely gets done

  23. Metadata tools • ArcCatalog • Part of ESRI’s ArcGIS software • Can customize for MGMG; download at: www.lmic.state.mn.us/chouse/arccatalog.html • DataLogr • Independent software • Customized for MGMG; download at:www.lmic.state.mn.us/chouse/datalogr.html
