Cultures • Ireland has two official languages: English, and Gaelic. • Ireland a small, independent country is located in northwestern Europe. • Ireland's national holiday is St. Patrick's Day, celebrated on March 17.
Dublin • Dublin lies nestled around the mouth of the river Liffey and Dublin Bay. • Population: 1,030,431 • The first documented settlement here was “permanent raiding camp” of the Vikings established in 1841.
Belfast • Population: 274,678 • Belfast is at the head of Belfast Lough on the north-eastern coast of Ireland. • Belfast is a fairly modern city with a bubbly nightlife.
Cork City • Population: 189,692 • Cork is sitting at the mouth of the River Lee in Ireland's South-West. • Cork was established by the Vikings in the 10th century.
Landforms • Land-68,890 sq km • Water-1,396 sq km • Total- 70,280 sq km • Terrain: Mostly level to rolling interior plain surrounded by rugged hills and low mountains; sea cliffs on west coast
History • The Potato Famine in Ireland would cut the population by half. • This terrible disease was caused by a fungus known as Phytophthora infestans. • An effective fungicide was not found until 1883.
Ireland’s Gaelic Football • By attendance records alone, this is Ireland’s most popular sport. • It may look similar to football, but using the hands to carry the ball, pass to teammates, and get the ball into the goal is not forbidden.
Ireland’s Hurling • Hurling is native to Ireland, and is incredibly popular. • It is somewhat similar to field hockey, although the ball is usually played in the air rather than on the ground.
Education • Ireland is an increasingly popular destination for students from all over the world. • Ireland is now a thoroughly modern nation with well developed manufacturing and international services sectors. • Ireland has the highest economic growth rate in the E.U. - hence the title 'The Celtic Tiger'.
