  1. Ch. 9 - Energy ***A swinging pendulum is a simple way of showing conservation of energy!*** **Energy relates to EVERY aspect, concept and topic that will ever be discussed** I. Work (W): Exerting a force over a distance A. Equation: W = Fd (SI units = Joules) B. Power (P): The rate at which work is done * Equation: P = W/t (SI units = Watts)

  2. II. Potential Energy: Energy that is stored by position or condition * Equation: GPE = mgh (SI units = Joules) III. Kinetic Energy (KE): Energy in motion… even molecules * Equation: KE = ½ mv2 (SI units = Joules) * Energy equations can be interchanged  W = KE  FD = ½ mv2

  3. IV. Conservation of Energy (LOCO Energy): Energy cannot be lost or gained, just changed. V. Machines: Devices that multiply force or change direction… machines NEVER multiply energy!! Fd = Fd A. Levers: greater distance exchanged for greater force B. Pulleys: work as levers (pull down one side, other goes up!) C. Mechanical Advantage: How much the force is multiplied MA = Resistance Force (Fr) / Effort Force (Fe) (No Units!!!) The work (energy) put out compared to work put in! VI. Efficiency: A. Eff. = (useful work output / total work input) times 100 = % B. Eff. = (actual MA / theoretical MA) times 100 = % C. ALWAYS LESS THAN 100% (CAN’T GET RID OF FRICTION)!!! [ car engines generally run about 30%]
