The Business of Colonization Joint Stock Companies – King James I of England granted a royal charter to the Virginia company to establish a settlement in America The Virginia company financed the establishing Jamestown. For their investment, stockholders would receive 4/5 of all the gold and silver found by the colonists. The remaining 1/5 went to the King Jamestown –

  8. Settlers Clash with Native Americans • English did not wish to live amongst Natives like the Spanish. They forced Natives off any land claimed by the English Monarch • English never forgot Powhatan’s hostility during the starving time. Economic Differences Split Virginia • Social hierarchy begins to develop in Jamestown, with poor settlers on bottom, wealthy planters on top • House of Burgesses – • Planters occupied the top positions in local government, enacted laws to benefit themselves • Governor Berkeley refuses to use tax money to fund defense against natives for frontier settlers • Bacon’s Rebellion – • Rebellion successful, later crushed by Berkeley’s reinforcements.
