  6. Three Tiers of Vocabulary (Beck, McKeown, Kucan, 2002)

  7. How do I determine that a word is TIER 2?

  8. Teaching Challenge • “In content areas, I am responsible for Tier 3 vocabulary. But Tier 2 words are crucial to understanding the directions or concepts. I can’t teach it all!” • Discuss this at your table. What are ways you already support students in Tier 2 acquisition during science, social studies, math, etc?

  9. Dissecting a text • Use the text for your grade level to complete the following activities. • Circle the Tier 3 content words students need to know in order to understand the text. • Underline the Tier 2 words students need to know in order to understand the text. • Choose the 5 most crucial words (either tier). • Now choose 1 anchor word that you will pre-teach. Create a 7 step process for that word.

  10. Debrief • Share your word at your table. • How hard was this activity? (scale of 1-10) • What was the hardest part? • How beneficial was this process for your everyday teaching? (scale of 1-10)

  19. A New Wiggle on Waste This is about worms. And why you -- yes, you! -- should welcome worms into your classroom or home. In Wisconsin, about 17 percent of the trash that goes to the landfill is food waste. That's a lot of wasted food, and a lot of wasted landfill space. It's food that could be fed to worms, which will graciously turn it into useful compost with just a little help from you. By setting up a vermicomposting (worm composting) system, you won't have to throw away as much waste -- an important consideration, especially if your school or family are charged by the garbage bag, can or weight for waste disposal. You'll also help extend the life of the landfill used by your community. Keeping worms is easy, enjoyable and educational and it doesn't take much time. When you do it well, vermicomposting is clean and odorless, and there's no need for fancy equipment. Anyone maintaining a worm bin will be fascinated by the way worms work. You may even find yourself thinking of them as pets. http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/caer/ce/eek/earth/recycle/wormcomp.htm
