  2. Project Goal • To provide an easy, non-direct way for apartment-complex residence to communicate with the intention of spurring further socializing between them. • Somewhat inspired from Kramer’s “wall of faces” in a Seinfeld episode • Many people that live in apartment buildings barely know their neighbors

  3. Initial Designs • FLATMATE: a digital bulletin board • Substantial wall-space and sorting/searching features • NEIGHBORS: a social networking site • Similar to Facebook, but automated so that you are always connected to your neighbors • ConnectMe: a portable device for socialization • Upload your “interests”, and will be alerted if someone else with similar interests is nearby.

  4. Narrowing Process • Decided to use ConnectMe idea for final design • Great reception from others • Most unique design idea • Convenient • Required least effort to use • Standalone rather than smart phone app does not limit audience to smart phone users

  5. Final Prototype Demo • Mobile link (actual ConnectME):  http://www.prism.gatech.edu/~gth738s/3750/mobile/ • Computer version (other half of software):  http://www.prism.gatech.edu/~gth738s/3750/computer/

  6. Evaluation results • Most people found it easy to use • Survey led to many good suggestions • Ability to manage history of alerts • There were too many “are you sure?” prompts • The Profile creation part on the PC received most criticism • It was too hard to navigate (people found it confusing and overwhelming)

  7. Future Changes to Prototype • Based on feedback, our next step would involve an overhaul of the Profile creation system • Make it simpler and easier to navigate • Make sure of larger screen size on PC • Remove most “are you sure?” prompts

  8. Lessons Learned • People want something new • They aren’t interested in having more social networking sites to go to • It’s really hard to keep a solid correspondence with four people • This project would be much harder without software like Google docs • Get as much feedback as you can as soon as you can • Start the process of designing in accordance with user expectations as soon as you can.
