  2. The Education Trust: Thinking K-16 • Achievement in America and Education Watch series describes student outcomes • Elementary and Middle schools are sending students to high school with higher reading skills, high school student graduates -- no better than a decade ago.

  3. An Achievement Gulf – of Our Own Making • “Near the end of high school, Blacks and Latino youngster have skills about the same as white students near the end of junior high school. • These patterns are not the results of poverty, racism or social conditions. • School systems themselves are to blame- taking those that have less and giving them less in school

  4. Are Today’s High School Graduates Ready? • High School completion rate-same as 30 years ago • High School completion in the world –17th • Reading skills improvement in elementary and middle school but no better when they leave high school as their peers a decade ago • Gains in Math and Science improved because of improvement below grade 8
