  2. New Pyramid • The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) changed the pyramid in 2005. They changed the pyramid to give Americans a better example to follow on how to eat. “Old Pyramid” “New Pyramid”

  3. Let’s Break Down the Pyramid • My pyramid has 6 main groups. They are grain, vegetables, fruit, milk, oils, and meat/beans. By looking at the groups in the pyramid you can tell how much of each group you are supposed to eat.

  4. Grains “Any food made from wheat, rice, oats, cornmeal, barley or another cereal grain is a grain product.” Some examples include: oatmeal, popcorn, and brown rice Girls age of 9-13 are recommended to have 5 oz. and boys are recommended to have 6oz. At least half of your grains daily should be whole grain

  5. Vegetables • Any vegetable or 100% vegetable juice is in this group. • Examples include: broccoli, lettuce, carrots, and corn. • Girls ages 9-13 are recommended to have 2 cups and boys age 9-13 should have 2 ½ cups. • There are five different groups of vegetables. They are dark green vegetables, orange vegetables, dry beans and peas, starchy vegetables, and other.

  6. Fruits • Fruits can be fresh, canned, frozen, or dried. • Some examples include bananas, apples, melons, berries, and 100% fruit juices. • Girls and boys the ages of 9-13 are recommended to have 1 ½ cups of fruit daily.

  7. Oils • Some examples of oils are canola oil, sunflower oil, and corn oil. • Girls and boys the ages of 9-13 are recommended to have 5 teaspoons of oil daily. • Majority of the oil we need daily, we consume in other foods like nuts and salad dressings.

  8. Milk • Some examples of milk include cheese, yogurt, pudding, and regular milk. • Most of your choices should be low fat or fat free. • Girls and boys the ages of 9-13 are recommended to have 3 cups of milk or milk products daily.

  9. Meat and Protein • “Most meat and poultry choices should be lean or low fat.” • Some examples include beef, ham, chicken eggs, nuts, dry beans and peas, and fish • Girls and boys the ages of 9-13 are recommended to have 5 oz. of meat and protein daily.

  10. Your Turn! Color in the Pyramid. Try to give an example of at least one food for each category.

  11. Examples from each food group: Grains: oatmeal and brown rice Vegetables: corn and broccoli Fruit: apples and oranges Oils: canola and corn oil Milk: cheese and yogurt Meat and Beans: fish and nuts

  12. New additions to the Pyramid The “new pyramid” includes a couple new elements. The stairs and the person running up them emphasis the importance of exercise in your daily routine.

  13. Daily exercise can be done in many ways. Some examples of activities include basketball, running, rock climbing, soccer, dancing, riding a bike, and swimming.
