  1. February 4, 2011 EQ: How did the actions of France and Washington’s Farewell address change the United States? Objectives: Explain how the French Revolution effected US foreign policies. Discuss the impact of President Washington Farewell Address on the United States. Homework: Section 4 Key Terms and Word Association Class Work

  2. The French Revolution -The French Revolution began in 1789. Revolution- an over throw of an established government. -Many Americans supported the French against their monarchy. -The French Revolution took a quick and bloody turn in 1793 called the Reign of Terror. -The Reign of Terror saw the death of the French King and Queen and 17,000 citizens using the guillotine.

  3. What kind of similarities can we make between the French Revolution and the Egyptian Protests?

  4. Turn to page 296 and read the Primary source “American Reaction to the Reign of Terror How did the author view Louis XVI’s execution? How do you think Philadelphians who attended the “tragical exhibition” felt about the king’s execution? Explain

Washington’s Farewell Address (Warnings) “Europe has a set of primary interests which to us have none or a very remote relation…Why…entangle our peace and prosperity in the toils [traps] of European ambition?...It is our true policy to steer clear of permanent alliances with any portion of the foreign world.” -President George Washington, Farewell Address, 1796 What events would President Washington be referring to and why would President Washington want the United States to avoid these toils?

  6. “The alternate domination of one faction over another, sharpened by the spirit of revenge, natural to party dissension…….is itself a frightful despotism………gradually incline the minds of men to seek security and repose in the absolute power of an individual; and sooner or later the chief of some prevailing faction, more able or more fortunate than his competitors, turns this disposition to the purposes of his own elevation, on the ruins of Public Liberty.” One neighbor will get a dictionary Define : dissension, despotism, repose and disposition Other neighbor answer these two questions: Why would President Washington give advice during his Farewell Speech? How has President Washington’s advice not been taken by the US?
