  1. Girly Geeks Group Lesson PlanAnna, Christina, Lorraine and Masumi NUTRITION

  2. School Initiatives • The school priority for 2012: Health and Physical Education • The school’s initiative is to spread a positive message of the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle. • Childhood obesity is a universal epidemic. • Young people who carry excess weight or are obese have a greater risk of a number of immediate and long-term health and behavioural problems

  3. About the Lesson • In groups of four, children will use the online resources we have provided to research the positive effects of eating healthy, and the negative effects of eating unhealthy. • The groups will document their findings on a blog website (tumblr.com) that we will provide. Each group will have their own web page on WikiSpaces where they will link their blog and eventually, their group presentation.

  4. Online Resources for Children http://www.goforyourlife.vic.gov.au/hav/articles.nsf/html/index.html Above is an online game that teachers can get students to become a part of using an interactive whiteboard. http://www.healthykids.nsw.gov.au/kids-teens/eat-fewer-snacks-and-select-healthier-alternatives.aspx http://www.healthykids.nsw.gov.au/kids-teens/eat-more-fruit-and-vegies.aspx Above are 2 articles from the Healthy Kids-Eat well, Get active website that students can use to research the negative effects of eating unhealthy and the positive effects of eating healthy.

  5. More Children’s Resources.. http://www.livestrong.com/article/351827-the-effects-of-children-eating-unhealthy-school-lunches/ Above is another article that children can obtain information on regarding the effects of eating unhealthy lunches.

  6. Using the websites we will provide, the groups will be required to find a suitable, healthy lunch that they will cook in class with help from adults.

  7. Websites to find a Nutritious Lunch www.taste.com.au is a recipe website that students can use to select a nutritious, healthy lunch. Using the search tool, they can decide what kind of meal they would like to make (and what is suitable to cook in the classroom). www.kidspot.com.auis also a great website that children can use. It provides some excellent options for school lunches which are the focus of this task.

  8. Once the children have cooked their nutritious lunches, the groups will take photos of their lunches and will finalise their progress on the Wiki space for parents and teachers to see. The way they show their findings is up to them. We will provide a few different ways the students can present their project to the class.

  9. Wiki Website and Example https://examplegroups.wikispaces.com/ We have created an admin page for the teachers to create each student’s group’s wiki. Using this space, students can all log in individually to edit their groups space. Students will be able to choose how to present their group project and can link almost any other software or document to the wiki space.

  10. Ways the groups can present their work… • Powerpoint • Report using Word • Blog on www.tumblr.com • Recipe Card on http://www.skiptomylou.org/recipe-card-maker/

  11. Teachers Resources Page We are focusing on the learning area of Health and Physical education. 1.
