  1. Circulatory systems ALL: explain the need for transport systems, define single and double circulatory systems and open and closed circulatory systems.  MOST: Discuss and apply single and double circulatory systems and open and closed circulatory to living organisms (fish/mammals/insects)  SOME: Create a model of a circulatory system using additional research and evaluate its limitations. Spec ref: F211: 1.2.2 a)b)c)

  2. ‘Why do we need transport systems?’

  3. What's the difference between these two?

  4. Surface area to volume ratio. • Multi cellular – cannot take in oxygen through their surface unless they are on the outside. • Single celled – can take in molecules, such as oxygen through their surface.

  5. Look at the table: What caused the evolution of a transport system (3 things) How has it developed? Increasing size, therefore decreasing SA:V ratio and increasing activity Transport system with no pump then with pump

  6. Different types of circulatory system Open Closed Single Double

  7. Different types of circulatory system Open: blood flows within the body cavities Closed: blood contained in blood vessels Single: (blood passes only once through the heart in one revolution). Double: (blood passes twice through the heart in one revolution).

  8. Closed Circulatory Systems Closed system: • Blood is always confined to the vessels – it never enters the body cavity. • A separate fluid, tissue fluid, bathes the tissues. • This allows the heart to pump blood faster and at higher pressure • e.g. mammals

  9. Single and Double Circulatory Systems Which is which and why? In fish, there is only one circuit (blood passes only once through the heart in one revolution). Blood is oxygenated before being delivered to the rest of the body then back to the heart – only one pumping motion does this. In mammals, there are two circuits (blood passes twice through the heart in one revolution). Blood is oxygenated in the pulmonary circulation before being delivered back to the heart to be pumped again to the rest of the body then back to the heart.

  10. Name of system? • Key fact? • Key fact? • Key fact?

  11. Double Circulatory Summary Heart Blood visits the heart twice on every circulation of the body This allows a high blood pressure to be maintained

  12. Surface Area to Volume Ratio Why does a single celled organism like bacteria not need a transport system? Why do humans and elephants need a transport system?
