  3. What you can expect from your classes… • Courses at GHS are developed to provide each student with the academic preparation necessary to pursue their post-secondary plans. 4-year college 2-year college Technical School Military Workforce We want you to have options, options, options!

  4. Scheduling Timeline • Timeline • February 5– Provided students with scheduling materials • February 14- Individual 20-minute scheduled appts with parents as needed • February 22 — Signing Day (Course Registration form due with teacher signatures) • April 22—Course requests passed out for final changes • April 26- Course request changes due from students • August —Schedule pass out for 2019-2020 *** NO changes will be made once schedules are passed out in August***

  5. Graduation Credit Requirements • Subject Area Required • English 4 • Social Studies (US, World, Gov) 3 • Science (1 life, 1 physical) 3 • Math 4 (must complete Alg. II) • PE .5 (may be waived) • Health .5 • Tech/Foreign Language 1 • Financial Literacy class 1 course (grades 9-12) • Fine Arts 1 credit (grades 7-12) • Additional credits 5-6 • Total 21

Global Scholars Diploma • If you are in the program, you will… • Have an interest in the global economy and cultural studies • Take 4-5 years of the same language • Complete a cultural experience • Complete course work outside of your regular schedule • You need to take the Global Issues course 9th or 10th grade. • http://www.granvilleschools.org/GlobalScholarsDiplomaProgram.aspx

  8. Credits from Middle School • If you have taken Spanish I, French I, Algebra I, Geometry, Biology, Literature Survey and Comp and/or Marching Band as a middle school student, these grades will appear on your high school transcript automatically. • You may want to retake any of these courses as a 9th grader if you received a C or below in middle school. The middle school grade will not impact your GPA even though the grade will remain on your transcript when a student retakes the course or changes their global language in 9th grade.

  9. 9th Grade Classes • Literature Survey & Composition or AdvancedLiterature Survey & Composition • U.S. History or Advanced U.S. History • Math • Science • Global Language • Some Form of Physical Education • Electives (i.e. Financial Literacy, Fine Arts) • Study Hall

Advanced vs. Regular • The Advanced courses will move at a faster pace and require more time spent in outside of class work, such as reading • Advanced Literature Survey & Composition • Advanced Biology • Advanced Geometry • Advanced U.S. History • Rest assured…our traditional classes are more than capable in equipping students for college-level work

  12. Science Options • Science • Physical Science (P) • Biology/Advanced Biology (L) • Chemistry/Advanced Chemistry (P)—if taking Alg. II and has completed Biology in 8th grade

Global Language: French, Spanish, Latin • This is considered a core class by colleges. • Most require a minimum of 2 years of the same language • Many prefer 3 or 4 years (depending upon the selectivity of the college/university) • Do I have the foundation to go into the 2nd year of the language? • Consult with your teachers in this area • Suggest retaking the 1st year if on track to receive a C or below • Should I wait until 10th grade to take a language?

Physical Education • Three Options • Physical Fitness Class – semester class during school year worth 0.25 credit (Need to take two classes to equal .5 credit which is required for graduation) • Four different courses being offered next year • Summer P.E. – summer school course taken first month of the summer worth 0.25 credit • See packet for details • PE Waiver—Does not award credit • This is not a combo deal! Students who use the PE waiver CANNOT take PE and vice versa.

Electives • Freshman year offers up to 1 ½ open periods • Financial Literacy graduation requirement: • Must take a class that has Financial Literacy components at some point in grades 9-12 • Other options: • Fine Art—Choir, Band, Orchestra, Drama, Visual Art • English electives • Business Classes • Industrial Technology- Intro to Technology, Construction Tech, Architecture Design, Home Service Technology*, Engineering Design • Informational Technology- Robotic Design, Intro to Programming, Web Design, Game Design, Computer and Mobile Apps * New Class

Logistics of the Schedule • Students can have 1 study hall each semester • Opportunities for tutoring and mentoring during study halls • 5 credits—OHSAA extracurricular requirement • 2.0 GPA—GHS extracurricular requirement • Make sure you choose enough course requests to fill 8 periods • Use the practice section on the back of the Course Request Form!

High School Options(Non-traditional course options) • Educational Options—Must be Pre-Approved • Independent Study • In conjunction with a teacher • Online Courses • Various courses not offered at GHS • Credit flexibility for outside experience • Graded by a committee based on paper, presentation, portfolio, and mentor evaluation • Testing out/showing mastery • January & August

College Course Options • Courses through College Credit Plus • May be taken at the college campus or online • Would be at no cost to the family • Intent Form must be signed and submitted by April 1 • Examples include COTC and OSU-Newark • COTC @ GHS • Taught by a professor at GHS • Courses offered based on student interest • For 2019-2020  Critical Thinking & TBD • Licking County Scholars at Denison University • Discounted price for families

  19. What happens next? • Students need to bring their completed registration forms to their 9th period teacher on February 22nd • Your student will be picking up a copy of their official schedule in August • No changes will be made to schedules in August. Ensure all changes are addressed on course request form prior to Summer Break • Once the school year starts, the only schedule changes that will be made are for the purposes of improper placement. • i.e. changing to appropriate rigor level (languages and math)

Reminders • Before the end of the school year, we will be sending home a letter with information on scheduling your Four-Year Academic Plan with your school counselor. • April 26th is the last day to make course request/schedule changes. • All scheduling information and documents are on the high school website at: http://www.granvilleschools.org/CourseInformationSchedulingDownloads.aspx *** NO changes will be made once schedules are passed out in August***
