  3. About the Proposal

  4. Why this Proposal? • Over the past ten years, PU has put in significant effort in building the teaching programmes and setting up of Computer Labs and Panjab University’s network. • There have been continuous upgrades to the teaching programmes, network infrastructure and computer equipment as the technology took tremendous strides over these years. • The PU has hitherto built a firm foundation of a modern and sophisticated campus network infrastructure. It is proposed that we should capitalize on our current provisions to move towards the vision of the development of a state-of-the-art Computer Equipment for effective teaching anywhere anytime. • A firm commitment from various funding agencies, top management and senior administrators is necessary to make this proposal viable. The total investment will not be small. Extensive training is needed to build up this culture, a culture which we firmly believe will be vital to the well-being of the University in the next few years.

Need of the Project • To reach out to Technology and Engineering Institutions located across India in general and northern part in particular • To disseminate the knowledge in the fields of engineering (VLSI design and Embedded Systems) and Science using modern e-learning tools • To adopt industry Open Standards in the University to allow for the most cost-effective acquisition of IT products. • To improve teaching-learning methods by integrating ICT in curriculum, develop and use multimedia software packages, tools and educational video films

Some Facts related to the Project • 0.5% of the electronics design business in India. • Thus, there is a need to invest in producing quality electronics design engineers to compete in world market. • The fields of VLSI design and embedded systems are converging into a common platform: the systemonchip. Thus, an exposure to this field is critical in manpower training. • In order to provide laboratory infrastructure for such training programmes, a virtual laboratory framework offers a cost effective solution.

Proposed Requirements in the 11th Plan Period In this proposal, we outline • the development and deployment of a virtual ”IMAGE VLSI and Embedded Systems Laboratory” infrastructure at PU, and • the delivery of educational content through this infrastructure using distance learning facilities provided by the Centre for Distance Engineering Education Program (CDEEP), IIT Bombay.

  8. Proposed Requirements in the 11th Plan Period The virtual laboratory would consist of three components: • Basic infrastructure at PU • Content delivery for teacher training at PU (through the CDEEP facility at IIT Bombay). • Content delivery for student training at PU

  13. Proposed Requirements: Basic Infrastructure …. • Basic Infrastructure at PU: (B) A streaming video interface to the internet (for delivery of CDEEP courses) or an EDUSAT terminal (C) A web interface to the software tools, with adequate network connectivity

Proposed Requirements in the 11th Plan Period: • Content Delivery for Teacher Training To train the teachers at the remote centres, CDEEP will deliver course content in the area of VLSI design and Embedded Systems to the remote centers by means of regular onsite visits by certified personnel who will be responsible for maintaining the quality of content delivery. • Content Delivery for Students A series of online laboratory courses in Hardware description languages, Simulation and Synthesis, and the use of FPGAs will be provided .

  16. Details of funds requested for 5 years Cost in Lacs Rs. (1 Lac= 100,000) • Recurring budget will include staff salaries, workshops, consumables, travel, Honorarium for experts, teachers & coordinators and contingency costs. • Non-recurring budget will include hardware, software, networking, UPS etc.

Expected Deliverables of the Proposal • Re-engineering the contents of more than 10 identified courses for the use of technology and engineering students • Disseminating the knowledge in the fields of engineering (VLSI design and Embedded Systems) and Computer Science using modern e-learning tools located across India in general and northern part in particular • Developing a series of online tutorials describing the use of the CAD tools • Strengthening the Computer Science and Engineering manpower • Setting up a dedicated Educational Server where teachers may post their educational material, which may be made available on the Internet/Intranet round the clock so as to facilitate the students
