ICSU/SCID • Priority Area Assessment (PAA) released 2004 • ICSU shall … assume a leadership role internationally in identifying and addressing critical policy and management issues related to scientific data and information • To facilitate a new, coordinated global approach to scientific data and information that ensures equitable access to quality data and information for research, education and informed decision-making • ~ 58 total recommendations • Ad-hoc Strategic Committee on Information and Data formed March 2007 to address key recommendations - report to CSPR • Terms of reference (WDC, FAGS, CODATA) • 3 in-person meetings (Jul, Nov 2007, Feb 2008)

ICSU/SCID • SCID recommendations (highlights) • TOR 1 - guide/oversee reform of WDC/ FAGS • New WDS (ICSU interdisciplinary body) • New governance, accountable, reporting • TOR 2 - liase with CODATA (strategies) • Align Task Groups with initiatives • TOR 3 - advise CSPR on ‘Other’ (i.e. leadership) • Form new ICSU standing committee (name TBD) • Forum (old SciDIF) to be initially facilitated by CODATA • Unions all to have high-level informatics presence! • Governance and responsibility are key issues • Full draft in 1 week, final to ICSU in April • Considered by members, CSPR and ICSU general assembly in Aug. 2008

IUGG/Union Commission • Based on eGY draft proposal to IUGG exec and from 2007 eGY General meeting - JoAnn Joselyn • Exec requested ad-hoc committee • IACS - Mark Parsons, NSIDC, IPYDIS (USA) • IAG - Ruth Neilan (USA) and Bernd Richter (Germany) • IAGA - Peter Fox, UCAR (USA) - CHAIR • IAHS - Pierrick Givone (France) • IAMAS - Maria Assunção F. Silva Dias, CPTEC/INPE (Brazil) (Vice-Pres.) • IAPSO - W John Gould, Southhampton, UK • IASPEI - Tim Ahern, IRIS, (USA) • IAVCEI - Adelina Geyer Traver, Barcelona (SPAIN) • eGY & CODATA - Charles Barton, Australian National University, Canberra (Australia) • Union Commission on Data and Information (working name)

IUGG/Union Commission • Terms of reference • Determine if the Associations support the assertions noted above (Central issues) • Augment the original eGY proposal in preparation for consideration by the IUGG Executive. • Proposal submitted Feb 4, 2008 • Aims, business areas, functions, near-, mid-, and long-term activities, and structure • Outcome ~ Oct. 2008

What else to fill the gaps? • 2007 - Dan Baker - revive the ‘CODMAC’ (under space studies board) to parallel the existing committee in the earth science (CGED under board of … at NAS, Jeff Dozier) • Congress needs a place to go to get the broadest and deepest advice on data issues - National Academy (Decadal Study?) • US National Committee of CODATA role • Other society roles (e.g. informatics) • Xinformatics is the future (astro, helio, etc.)
