  1. Humans and the Environment Unit EQ: How do human activities affect the physical and biological features of the earth? Diane Gioia – Bell’s Crossing Elementary

  2. To Albert Schweitzer who said “Man has lost the capacity to foresee and to forestall. He will end by destroying the earth.”’ -Rachael Carson’s dedication in Silent Spring • “We are the most dangerous species of life on the planet, and every other species, even the earth itself, has cause to fear our power to exterminate. But we are also the only species which, when it chooses to do so, will go to great effort to save what it might destroy.” -Wallace Stegner • The earth does not belong to man; man belongs to the earth. This we know… All things are connected. Whatever befalls the earth befalls the sons of the earth. Man did not weave the web of life, he does to himself… This earth is precious to Him [the Creator], and to harm the earth is to heap contempt upon its creator. -Chief Seattle Suquamish Tribe 19th Century

  9. Pollution • Making the environment unclean with wastes • Gases, chemicals, heat, garbage, and noise • Materials that cause pollution are pollutants

  10. Air pollution • Caused by burning fuels and trash • Industries cause such pollution • Causes lung disease and acid rain

  11. Water pollution • Industrial wastes, sewage, and chemicals dumped into water supply • http://streaming.discoveryeducation.com/search/assetDetail.cfm?guidAssetId=56CAE996-65EF-41CA-9B32-4BB2739AC5E9

  12. Soil pollution • Some is caused by pollutants in the air or chemicals used to control pests • Burying toxic wastes can cause soil pollution as well

  13. Consequences of pollution • Acid rain • Endangering or extinction of animals • Contamination of environment • Poor air quality • Disease

  14. Questions • How are the types of pollution different? • What is pollution? • What are some causes of pollution?

  15. Questions • What are some ways pollution can affect the environment? • How can humans reduce pollution?

  16. Current conditions of the environment of the planetEarth http://www.eco-pros.com/planetearth.htm Click on the Earth to see how you can learn more.

  17. Pollution Human Impact Vocabulary Fossil Fuels Beach erosion Examples of Fossil Fuels Habitat loss Emissions Species Extinct Deforestation Endangered

  21. Listen to hear how humans affect oceans...

  22. Video Quiz(Copy and Answer) • What has caused pollution in the world? • What effects on humans does pollution have? • What form of pollution causes lung damage? • Where is the worst pollution in the world found?

  23. Humans and their Environment 5:47 – video streaming

  24. What is extinction? • When a species no longer exists CAUSES • Natural processes • Caused by climate changes, predators, environmental factors, and human involvement

  25. What is Endangered? • Dangerously close to being extinct Causes • Habitat Destruction • Pollution • Overuse or over hunting Where have all the animals gone? 25:05 Click on the Orca

  26. Natural Resources • Resources taken from the environment • Renewable resources can be replaced by nature • Nonrenewable resources cannot be replaced

  27. Questions • What is extinction? • What are some causes of extinction? • What is the difference between renewable and nonrenewable resources?

  28. Conservation • Wise use of materials and energy • Recycling (reusing) materials • Decreasing amounts used • Using alternative forms of energy and materials

  29. What are the 3 Rs? • Reduce is to use less of something • Reuse is to use something over again • Recycle is to make a new product from old materials

  30. In your notes or journal, discuss what the next slide means: • How should humans impact the environment? • What should YOU not do? • What is one thing you can change in your community? • What can YOU do that would impact the environment in a positive way?
