  1. Environmental ScienceThe study of interactions between humans and the environment. Summary of units, chapters and examples of stuff we will study.

  2. Unit 1: Intro • Tools of Env. Sci. like the scientific method, statistics and models (such as climate models used to predict weather). • Geosphere (solid parts of earth), atmosphere, hydrosphere, and Biosphere.

  3. Unit 2: Organization of Life • Ecosystems (all the organism in an area). • How ecosystems work. • Biomes (climate regions). • Aquatic ecosystems: freshwater and marine. We will study our local freshwater and saltwater ecosystems.

  4. Unit 3: Populations • Human population history and trends. • Biodiversity and conservation

  5. Unit 4 Water, Air, Land • Water management and pollution • Air pollution (~7mil deaths/yr) • Climate change and global warming, resulting heat waves and hurricanes, and solutions. • Agriculture and forestry

  6. A clear cut in Oregon.

  7. We’ll learn about groups replanting super redwoods.

  8. Unit 5 Mineral and EnergyResources • Mining • Nuclear Energy: Fukushima disaster, 3 mile island scare, fusion research and development. • Fossil Fuels: Oil, coal, natural gas. • Renewable energy

  9. Geothermal Power in Iceland

  10. Unit 6 Health and the Environment • Pollution and human health • Economics: incentives for polluters, • Policy: Paris agreement, cap and trade, CFC reduction agreements. • Individual actions.
