Teachers/Advisers Make A Difference Since 1945 FCCLA advisers have helped over 10 millionyouth across the United States, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands become leaders and address important personal, family, work and societalissues. Thanks for all that have chapters in Prince William. Looking for a chapter in each school for 2011-2012!!!

Why FCCLA for All Schools? • Mandated as part of FACS curriculum in VA • Linking with youth on local, state and national levels of membership with common focus • For Students. . . • For Teachers . . . • For Schools . . . • For Community. . . • Today-- look at programs and resources to help YOU!!!

  6. Membership Facts • Nationally nearly 200,00 members-----VA has 9,881 • Your chapter????? Aim to increase this year • To officially join– affiliate– minimum of 12 members • Dues-- $9.00 national, $3.00 state for total of $12.00 to send to national, because VA has DIRECT affiliation • VA endorses Middle School affiliation– $600 for all • New this year- advisers pay dues, (modeling) • Only use materials, logo, name, merchandise, resources, etc. IF AFFILIATED.

  7. Affiliation Process • 2011-2012 school year MUST BE DONE ON LINE • System is now open. NEW system as of 8/17/11 • Go to www.fcclainc.org • Click on the affiliation button– enter your email address, first time enter Password 1 (then determine your own password ) • Must have your chapter ID number to move further, if new chapter contact national • Will ask you to enter names of members and proceed– will appear in an “online shopping”

Affiliation Process Continues • Before submitting, double check spelling & grade level. • Make sure to get a roster printout for payment. • Know that dues for adviser will be added to the member total. • Can go back at any time to add more members. • May need to go back change “type” of member. • For a year of membership benefits submit prior to Nov. 1 • On the opening page of the affiliation process is listed a number of helps to understand the system, process, and actions needed. Do not hesitate to contact National.

The Handbook to Ultimate Leadership– why use? • Full of resources for teacher, student, officers • Ready to use format for the handouts • Excellent for use with parents, school officials, community resource personnel • Worth the time to explore and explore and explore • Resource also for your officers, it will encourage them to take on new roles of leadership • Best tool to help new and/or experienced advisers understand the organization and the opportunities • DO NOT allow it to overwhelm, use it in small parts over time

Begin with a class discussion of local needs. • What are some service agencies in the area? • Be tuned in for “emergencies” that may occur during the year. • Many ideas offered in the Community Service CD and The Handbook to Ultimate Leadership (suggested on the action plan). • Check out to see if there are grants to assistance. • Allow the members/students to plan using the Planning Process and do as much as possible in class. • National Outreach Project- Share Our Strength (education and fundraising) and March of Dimes (education of members and others)

STAR Events • Refer to the sheet, listing the events. • Fit into every topic, class, task, competencies of FACS • Allow for personal growth and leadership development. • Many areas are requiring that student be in “competition” to attend events, sessions, conferences, etc to attend. • Provides rigor to our teaching. • Can be used as class assessments/evaluations. • Can be done by all students as well as members. • Links perfectly with other national programs. Co-Curricular FCCLA • Occurs during class time • Compliments classroom learning • Encourages critical thinking, practical reasoning, & problem-solving • Utilizes FCCLA resources in class • Projects are initiated, developed, and evaluated by students (learning is hands-on and meaningful) • Empowers youth to take action for positive change • Provides incentives and recognition for students • Enhances FCS education– the ONLY way to do it!!!
