  3. Laboratory Safety Information Clarifying ?s dress code - When working in the science lab, safety gear must be worn. Examples: 1. Goggles, 2. Hair tie, 3. Close-toed shoes General precautions 1. Read and follow all directions. 2. Get permission before experimenting on your own. 3. You must have adult supervision. 4. Eating and drinking are not allowed during a science lab. First Aid Notify the teacher of any injuries. Know the location of the sink, telephone, and first aid kit. Fire safety Be aware of any open flames and heated chemicals or fluids. Never reach across a flame. Never heat closed/sealed containers. Chemicals Never mix chemicals unless directed to do so. Clean any spills and notify your teacher immediately. Dispose of materials properly and never re-use chemicals. Glassware Never use broken or chipped glassware. Always use a heat screen to protect glassware from an open flame. Never eat or drink from laboratory glassware. Always clean glassware thoroughly when you are finished with a lab. Page #

  4. Laboratory Safety Information Clarifying ?s Sharp instruments Always cut away from yourself. When handing sharp instruments to someone else, present the handle. Do not run with sharp instruments. In case of injury, notify the teacher immediately. Animals & Plants Notify your teacher if you have allergies to plants or animals. Never harm an animal while performing an experiment. (school or home) Wash your hands when finished working with plants or animals. For field work, wear long pants and close toed shoes. Depending on the conditions, consider also wearing long sleeves, head protection, and gloves. Ending experiments 1. Clean your area. 2. Return all equipment to proper storage areas. 3.
