  1. Character Foil A character that contrasts another character in order to highlight the other characters ideas or personality traits.

  2. For example, • A down to earth character may be a foil to an absent-minded, flighty character. • Writer’s use foils to emphasize certain traits of another character or simply to set off or enhance this character!

  3. Focus for Act 3 Think about Elizabeth and Abigail and how they contrast each other. We will determine what the author purposely emphasizes about Elizabeth by presenting Abigail as her foil.
