Out There and In Here:Design for blended scientific inquiry learning Anne Adams, Sarah Davies, Trevor Collins, Tim Coughlan, Steve Swithenby, Yvonne Rogers
Project Aim • To develop technologies that support people working together, across different contexts, in a manner suitable for their location • remote and co-located science learners in geology fieldwork Issues for investigation • Technical and pedagogical design • Collaboration in inquiry-based learning • Equitable inclusion of all learners
Fieldwork Learning Enabling Remote Activity Ancient mountains: practical geology in Scotland
Out There and In Here • New opportunity to synchronously combine field data gathering with research, analysis and reflection; rather than analysis at a later date away from the actual location
Out There and In Here connecting groups of learners sharing information
Design and Development • Built on stakeholder perceptions of fieldwork learning, user trials, participant design workshops • Visualisations to support integration of data from multiple sources on different platforms • Orchestrating distributed interactions to enable equitable co-located and remote data sharing
In Here (IH) Out There (OT) Technology overview Server Server • Original media files stored locally (IH and OT) - File server - File server - Web server - Web server • File synchronisation • From OT to IH • Processed IH • From IH to OT - Chat server - Chat client iPad x 1 Microsoft Surface Tabletop - Web browser - Chat client Client Laptops x 2 • Single content management system (IH) with distributed media files (IH and OT) Phone x 3 - Camera / Scanner - Camera - Web browser - Web browser - Chat client - Chat client
Observations Filtering different types of information - from books, maps, web resources - from rocks in the field - reflection and information sharing Joint understanding - failure and success : creation of hypotheses Shareability and devices - laptops : phones : iPads : tabletop : shared representations Live now! - value of a live, synchronous experience Issues around - equity, ownership, awareness
Summary • System for collaborative inquiry-based learning across different contexts in real time • Enables remote participation in fieldwork learning • New opportunities to synchronously combine field data gathering with research, analysis and reflection • Issues : equity, ownership, awareness, shared representation
