  4. Internet The word Internet is an abbreviation of INTERNATIONAL NETWORK, an INTERnational NETwork of computers spread throughout the globe. The basic idea of internet is to connect all these computers with each other by connection network [dial-up connection, LAN, WAN, Wireless network etc] Intranet: An intranet is an internal, secured business environment, which uses HTML and TCIP protocols like the Internet, but operates on a LAN (local area network).

  5. Useful Terms: Must Know • URL:Uniform Resource Locator. The URL specifies the Internet address of a file stored on a host computer . • Website: a website is the storehouse of information and data. • I.P. ADDESS:is a number of website. • WEB BROWSERS OR INTERNET BROWSER: a web browser is software used to explore internet eg ie,firefox,netscape. • SERVERS are computers with a 24-hour Internet connection. • Clientsare software programs used to access files on a server

Useful Terms: Must Know • DOWNLOADING:is when you take a file from someone else's computer and put it on your own. • UPLOADING: to send/load a file to another computer/server. • FTP: stands for File Transfer Protocol. This is both a program and the method used to transfer files between two computers Eg: filezilla [free], cute FTP, WS-FTP etc. • Internet Service Provider (ISP): connects you to the Internet. • SSH: (Secure Shell) was developed by SSH Communications Security Ltd., to log into another computer over a network, to execute commands in a remote machine, and to move files from one machine to another

  7. Useful Terms: Must Know • CD-ROM: is an abbreviation for Compact Disc, read-only-memory. • CPU: Central Processing Unit. This is the brain of the computer. • Cursor: is a visual indicator. • Drive: any part of the computer where disks reside and operate, temporarily or permanently. See floppy drive, CD drive, and hard disk/hard drive. • Floppy disk/diskette-- is a flat, portable, disk made of plastic that can store files written magnetically on it's surface.

  8. Useful Terms: Must Know • Gig or GB: refers to the amount of memory or space, when used to describe data storage. One Gig or gigabyte is equal to 1,024 megabytes. • Hard disk/hard drive-- this is a permanent storage unit containing a disk or disks, that are made from metal. • Hardware: the physical components of a computer, including cables, the keyboard, the CPU, monitor, etc. • Meg or MB: refers to the amount of memory or space, when used to describe data storage. 1 MB is equal to 1,048,576 bytes.

  9. Useful Terms: Must Know • Modem: is a device used to connect a computer to internet via a telephone lines. Int. or ext • Monitor: the screen on which you see your work, whether in color, grayscale, or black-and-white. • Mouse: a small tool that duplicates the movements of your hand on the computer's screen. • MP3: this stands for "MPEG-1 Audio Layer-3" and is a digital, compressed music file. • Network-- a group of computers spread out over a large area that are connected with each other

Useful Terms: Must Know • NIC: an abbreviation for Network Interface Card, this is a card inserted into your computer or laptop that allows it to communicate with a network. • Operating System or Platform-- these terms refer to the software that your computer uses to operate .Win98, Win ME, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Linux are common platforms. • Peripherals-- are devices connected to a computer which aren't a part of the main machine. Examples are a mouse, speakers, keyboards, printers, scanners, etc.

  11. Useful Terms: Must Know • RAM-- Random Access Memory, the computer's "short term" memory used whenever an action is performed by a program. It is also called the "active memory". • ROM-- Read-Only Memory, in which information is saved once and can never be altered. • Software- also called an application, this is any information a computer uses to perform a task; also, any information saved on a disk. • Teleconferencing- is to hold a conference using a telephone or network connection. • USB- stands for Universal Serial Bus. • Videoconferencing- is used to transmit audio and video data.

  12. Search Engines • Search engine is a searchable database of Internet files collected by a computer program. An index is created from the collected files, e.g., title, full text, size, URL, etc. There is often no selection criteria for these collection of files, except a ranking of "best fit" results. • Searching for something, or someone? The Internet can be the quickest, and least expensive way to find information...as long as you know how to use the search engines efficiency.
