Nouns. What is a noun. A noun is the name of a person, place, animal or thing. Nouns in German are special. They are always written with a capital letter There are 3 groups of nouns, so each noun belongs to a group. Groups. Each group has its own word for ‘the’ ‘der’ ‘die’ ‘das’.

  2. What is a noun • A noun is the name of a person, • place, • animal • or thing.

  3. Nouns in German are special • They are always written with a capital letter • There are 3 groups of nouns, so each noun belongs to a group

  4. Groups • Each group has its own word for ‘the’ • ‘der’ • ‘die’ • ‘das’

  5. Question • How do we know which group a noun belongs to?

  6. Answer • When you learn a new word, learn the word for ‘the’ that goes with it, then you will never go wrong

  7. Der words • These words are in blue • all male people e.g. der Vater • All seasons e.g. der Sommer • All the days e.g. der Montag • All the months e.g. der Februar • Lots of other words e.g. der Kuli

  8. Die words • These words are in red • All female people (except ‘the girl’) e.g die Mutter • Usually words ending in –e e.g. die Schule • Words ending in –in e.g. die Lehrerin • Lots of other words e.g die Fahne

  9. Das words • These words are written in green • Words ending in –chen e.g. das Mädchen • Usually words from other languages e.g. das Hotel • Lots of other words e.g. das Kino

  10. Kasus - Case In German there are four cases: • Nominativ • Akkusativ • Dativ • Genitiv

  11. Kasus The doer of the action is in the nominative case Example: Ein iPodistteuer – An iPod is expensive The iPod is doing the action Therefore the iPod is the doer and is in the nominative case

  12. Kasus The receiver of the action (verb) is in the accusative case Example: Ichkaufeeinen iPod – I buy an iPod I am doing the verb – I is in the nominative Case The iPod is receiving the action. Therefore, an iPod is in the accusative case

  13. Der bestimmte Artikel • Is the word for “the”. • In German there are several words for the word “the” der, die, das, die

  14. Der bestimmte Artikel As you can see “der” words are the only words that change in the accusative case

  15. Regel - Akkusativ Nominativ + sein Akkusativ + other verbs (e.g. haben, suchen, fressen etc.)

  16. Ein Beispiel Das ist der Hund. Ich kaufe Hundefutter für den Hund.
