  1. Do Now: Using your prior knowledge, which type of eclipse is happening here? Draw a picture of it in your notebook. Teaching Point: “To model the interactions between the Earth and moon.”

  2. TP: “To model the interactions between the Earth and moon.”The Moon Causes the Tide • The moon’s gravity pulls on the ocean making it rise; this is the tide • There are two high tides and two low tides every day, each ~6.5 hours apart from each other

  3. TP: “To model the interactions between the Earth and moon.”Spring and Neap Tides Spring Tide- when the Sun, Moon, Earth system are lined up in a straight line creating a bigger high tide than usual. Neap Tide- the Moon and Sun are positioned at right angles relative to the Earth producing a smaller high tide than usual.

  4. TP: “To model the interactions between the Earth and moon.”The Eclipsing of Objects Solar Eclipse- when the Moon casts it’s shadow on the Earth; the Moon is between Sun and Earth. Lunar Eclipse-when the Earth casts it’s shadow on the Moon; the Earth is between Sun and Moon.

  5. TP: “To model the interactions between the Earth and moon.”Quick Assessment TP: To understand the different types of winds.”

  6. TP: “To model the interactions between the Earth and moon.”Quick Assessment TP: To understand the different types of winds.” Task- Quickly think about the material we just covered over the last 10 minutes • We will all put our heads down and you raise your hand when you agree with what I say. • Heads down!

  7. TP: “To model the interactions between the Earth and moon.”Class Activity Student 1- Create a model showing the alignment between the sun, moon, and Earth for both a spring and a neap tide to occur. Student 2- Create a model showing the alignment between the sun, moon, and Earth for both a solar and lunar eclipse. Student 3- Create a model showing the alignment between the sun, moon, and Earth for both tides and both eclipses.

  8. TP: “To model the interactions between the Earth and moon.”Depth of Knowledge The moon is moving away from the Earth at a rate of about 3.8 centimeters per year. Eventually, the Earth’s moon will be lost to outer space. Predict some of the effects this will have on Earth. or The moon is thought to have formed from a collision with an early Earth about 4.6 billion years ago. Predict some of the evidence that might be found in moon rocks that supports this theory.

  9. TP: “To model the interactions between the Earth and moon.”Lesson Summary • What is the most important thing you learned in today’s lesson? • Why was that the most important thing that you learned?
