Properties Of Matter Physical and Chemical
What is a Property? • A property describes how an object looks, feels, or acts • You can describe objects in many ways by using: • Size- how big or small it is • Shape- is it a round, square, diamond, triangle… • Colors- what colors does it have • Textures- how does it feel, is it bumpy or smooth • Smell- how does it smell, is it sweet or stinky
Physical Properties • Physical properties- can be seen or measured without changing how that object looks • Color, shape, texture, smell • Mass- how big or small is it (size) • Volume- how much space does it take up • State- solid, liquid or gas • Flexibility- can it bend • Density- does it sink or float
Flexibility • The ability of an object to be bent out of shape, or molded, into another shape
Density • Density is the amount of ‘stuff’, or matter, in a given space, or volume. • Tells us if the object will sink or float in water
Density of Liquids and Gasses • Liquid Layers: Each liquid is a different density so the liquids form layers. • Knowing the density of something can also tell you what it is
Measuring Density • To find an objects density (D), first measure its mass (m) and volume (V). • Then use the following equation: • Density = mass volume
Chemical Properties • Look at the picture of the car. • Describe where you have seen other examples of rusting
Chemical Properties • Chemical properties are characteristics of a substance that determine how it will react with other substances. • Describes its "potential" to undergo some chemical change or reaction
Chemical Properties • Flammability • how easily something will burn or start a fire • Reactivity • How easily something will go through a chemical change • Conductivity • How easily something will conduct electricity
