What is Sustainable ICT? “ICT sustainability in government is the responsible acquisition, installation, use and disposal of information and communications technologies and services so as to utilise resources more effectively, improve efficiency and increase productivity, and reduce the environmental impact of operations. It also includes the effective use of information and communications technology to promote more sustainable practices in industry and the community.” Sustainable ICT Plan – Australian Federal Government - 2010

ICT Sustainability for Sustainable Cities • Products, systems and networks are essential drivers of productivity improvements and innovation • They will enable sustainability solutions in all networks of Councils life: buildings, energy production and use, mobility, water and sewage, open spaces, education and public health and safety • ICT innovation: a catalyst for changes in personal, work and community life

  17. Results to date • Six Performance Areas • Goal 1: Reduce Energy Use • Goal 2: Meter, Monitor, Report and Control • Goal 3: Dematerialise Communications • Goal 4: Reduce Waste • Goal 5: Automate Processes • Goal 6: Governance, Awareness and training programs

  18. Results to date • More than 80 recommendations, most of them with KPIs attached and benchmarks identified • Pilot implementation targeted 6 must-have KPIs to be implemented over a period of 3 months • A minimum of 18 KPIs were identified or baselined during that period.

Power Management • Calculation of savings due to shut down of PCs and screens: • Between 212 and 497 tons of CO2-e (49 to 115 cars off the road) • Between $12,000 and $19,000 dollars in savings annually Note: Ranges between 360 to 500 PCs + laptops + monitors. Comparison of PC running 24 hours, with screensavers on after hours. Vs. PCs with screensavers disabled, power savings features enabled and automatically shut down after hours and on weekends.

Datacentre electricity usage • 21% to 38% of Civic Centre electricity usage by the datacentre equipment alone • When including the supporting infrastructure, this can be as high as 55% Note: Calculations based on submeters data, energy star or manufacturer's info depending on the Council. Supporting infrastructure includes air conditioning (heating and cooling) and lighting.

  22. eLearning • 24 tons of CO2-e in savings • 68.2 hours in lost time Calculated with 205 courses given online compared to courses face-to-face in a metropolitan Council.

  23. Printers Rationalisation • Electricity usage drop by 31% - $3,400 savings yearly • 31 tons of CO2-e reduction yearly • Paper usage estimated to drop by 50% - $23,000 savings yearly + related emissions

  24. What next? • More workshops to come: • Swan Hill for North West region - 23rd August • Manningham for Metro East region - 1st September • ICT Sustainability Maturity Assessment finalised • Report and recommendations updated and Version 2 released • Integration with ICT Technology Awards
