Learn how to use laws of exponents effectively - zero power, multiplication, division, raising to a power, negative exponents, and identifying patterns. Practice examples included.
E N D
The zero power • Anything to the power of zero is one
You try • 40=1 • X0=1 • 49050=?
Multiply with same base number • If you are multiplying and the base number is the same then you add the exponents • (x4)(x6)=x10 • (56)(58)=514
You try • (34)(310) • (y5)(y7)
Dividing with the same base number • If you are dividing and the base number is the same them you subtract • T7 =T2 • T5 • 510 =51 • 59
You try • W6 =? • W4 • 49 =44 • 45
Raising a power to a power • When raising a power to a power, you multiply the exponents • (b2)3 =b6 • (67)4 =628
You try • (k5)6 = • (34)5
What’s the pattern • 35 = 243 • 34 = 81 • 33 =27 • 32= 9 • 31 = 3 • 30 = 1 • So what would 3-1 as fraction =?, 3-2 3-3
Negative exponents • Negatives exponents make the number flip • So if it is a whole number it becomes a fraction • If it is in the denominator it moves to the numerator • If it is in the numerator than it moves to the denominator
You try • 5-6 = • 1-3 = • 4___ = • 6-7
