  6. What was pottery originally used for? To store and preserve food

  7. What is a kiln? A kiln is a furnace used for firing ceramic products.

  8. Describe the first kilns. The first kilns were open fire pits covered with straw or wood.

  9. What type of kiln is used in the art room? We use an electric kiln, not gas or wood.

  10. What is clay? Clay is dirt, decomposed rock material.

  11. What temperature does our clay pieces reach in the kiln? Our clay reaches approximately 2000 F.

  12. GREEN WARE __________ is clay before it has been bisque fired, but after it has hardened.

  13. Clay that has been fired once is… Bisque

  14. Define glaze. Glaze is minerals applied to bisque ware. The minerals are fired again to produce a colored, finished surface. C. J. Meaders - glazing

  15. What is scoring the clay? A way of adding texture to the clay to help pieces adhere.

  16. Why does clay need to be of equal thickness? Clay should be of an equal thickness, so it will dry equally in order to reduce the chances of breakage.
