  2. Allele • Different forms of the same gene • Represented by a letter • Example: B or b • Each parent gives offspring one allele for a trait, making a gene pair (genotype).

  3. Dominant Allele • Represented by a capitol letter • Example: B • “stronger trait” • Only one dominant allele is needed in the gene pair for the dominant trait to show.

  4. Recessive Allele • Represented by a lower case letter • Example: b • “weaker trait” • Recessive trait can only be shown if two recessive alleles are inherited.

  5. Genotype • Pair of genes inherited from parents • Each letter represents a gene (allele) • Example: BB, Bb, or bb

  6. Homozygous • Genotype with two of the same alleles • The genotype could have 2 dominant alleles or 2 recessive alleles. • Example: BB or bb

  7. Heterozygous • Genotype with two different alleles. • The genotype will have one dominant and one recessive allele. • Example: Bb

  8. Phenotype • Physical traits that result from a genotype. • Example: 3 body segments, yellow legs, hover wings

  9. Reebop Genetics • You will be determining the genotypes and phenotypes of a Reebop by flipping a coin. • Heads= Dominant Allele • Tails= Recessive Allele

  10. BODY SEGMENTS: bb = 2 body segments BB or Bb = 3 body segments TAIL: Straight tail = tt Curly tail = TT or Tt

  11. EYES 2 eyes = EE or Ee No eyes = ee ANTENNA: 2 Round antenna = AA or Aa 2 Flowered antenna = aa

  12. HOVER WINGS NO WINGS = hh 2 Hover wings = HH or Hh LEGS Blue legs = L L or Ll Yellow legs = l l
