  1. The Witches Alex.B, Milly, Jemma, Sami, Dashiand Jacinta

  2. Why? • Plant false hope in Macbeth’s mind- pick on the weak • EVIL- toying with Macbeth because they can • Planting ambition • Knowing the future is always bad and they tell Macbeth about it

  3. Deceiving people with false hope • “security is mortals’ chiefest enemy” (III.v.32-33)- they know that it is man’s downfall and the witches use it against him • “Lesser than Macbeth but greater” (I.ii.64) - playing on Macbeth’s security and putting Macbeth against Banquo.

  4. Planting ambition • “Thou shalt be king though thou be none. So all hail Macbeth and Banquo” (I.ii.66-67) - telling someone vulnerable that they will have power builds ambition • “I bear a charmed life which must not yield to one of woman born.” (V.viii.11-12) - his ambition blinds him to real danger because he relies on the witches prophecies • “Thriftless ambition that will ravin up thine own life’s means!” (II.iv.28-29)

  5. Knowing the future is always bad. • Telling Macbeth the future encourages him to make that future happen which ultimately makes the witches the cause.- “Thou must do if thou have it.” (I.v. 21)- “Fleance is son that keep him company whose absence is no less material to me” (III.ii.134-135)
