  4. Where does hair come from? • Produced by a hair follicle • Daughter cells are created and pushed away • Die • Due to death, almost entirely protein

  5. Function • Minor protective functions • Guard against bumps • Keeps sweat out of eyes • Shields eyes • Keeps foreign particles out of respiratory tract

  6. Nail • Modification of the epidermis • Comparable to a hoof or claw of other animals • Transparent/colorless • Pink color is from large blood supply • Blue color signifies lack of blood supply

  7. Infections • Athlete’s foot • Itchy, red, peeling between toes • Fungus

  8. Infections • Boils • Inflammation of the hair follicle • Bacterial infection • Form of staph infection

  9. Infections • Cold Sore (fever blisters) • Itch and sting • Herpes Simplex infection • Remains dormant until activated by emotional upset, fever or UV radiation
