What is Civic Engagement? • “Civic engagement means working to make a difference in the civic life of our communities and developing the combination of knowledge, skills, values and motivation to make that difference. Service Learning vs. Community Service From Learning Through Serving: A Student Guidebook to Service-Learning Across the Disciplines • Service-Learning: Students engage in community service activities with intentional academic and learning goals and opportunities for reflection that connect to their academic disciplines. • Community Service: Students Engage in activities to meet actual community needs as an integrated aspect of the curriculum

  5. Service-Learning • Connect course content with actual experience • The point is for students to grow their skills and knowledge because they are bringing their capabilities to REAL WORLD problems, and benefit the community in the meantime. • Give and Take Relationship

  9. How can my organization fit into many different majors? • Think outside the box • Can you use marketing help? What about statistical analysis of data? How about oral histories of people involved with your organization? There are many different ways to engage students, even outside or your main focus area.

  10. Tips for engaging students • Flexible hours • Meaningful work • Well organized/coordinated work • Work with people/clients • Ability to see outcome of work (in some form) • Ability to use special skills/talents • Ability to be creative

  11. Things to do on campus… • Be a guest speaker on campus • Help host a film or discussion • Bring important issues to our attention • Tap into one of our annual programs (VWIL service day, Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, etc.)

  12. What we need from you… • Fill out a form (or multiple forms) for various volunteer activities with your organization • Send or bring us brochures, mission statements, contact information, and other helpful materials

  13. Community Service Fair Tuesday, January 15 • Fill out a form to participate in a Community Service Fair during the Fall semester each year. It’s a great way to connect with students AND faculty and to get more volunteers at your organization!

Reasons Students Participate in Internships • “Test drive” a career choice (w/o permanent commitment) • Build resumes • Gain practical experience in a potential career field • Cultivate new skills • Learn about all facets of an organization • Develop a professional network and cultivate references • Prepare for Graduate School • Some MBC majors require the completion of an internship

Internship Program at MBC • MBC emphasis on experiential learning • 287 – Exploratory Internship (related to a career) • 387 – More specific, career training (related to major) • Must have faculty approval/sponsorship to receive academic credit • 50 hrs of work = 1 credit hour • May be paid or unpaid • May be completed in any location • May be completed in fall or spring semesters, May Term, or during the summer • May begin the summer after freshman year

Strategies for a Successful Partnership • Maintain contact with the Career Development office/Julie Chappell • Keep profile updated in MonsterTrak • Submit current postings in the JIN or MBC daily announcements • Provide meaningful learning experiences and feedback to students • Serve as a networking and referral source to students, as appropriate
