  3. In order to use the subjunctive we have to take certain steps. Per esempio: Io voglio che Franco vada alla festa di Maria STEP 1: Does the sentence have 2 clauses?. YES! Is the subject of the main clause different from the subject of the dependent clause? STEP 2: YES! Is there a WEIRDO Verb in the main clause? STEP 3: A WHAT???

  4. These verbs are lovingly called the WEIRDO verbs! The subjunctive is used when a verb expresses: W ishing E motions } In the main clause of a sentence. I mpersonal Expressions R equest D oubt O pinion

  5. Now, let’s go back to our original sentence. Io voglio che Franco vada alla festa di Maria We determined that there are 2 clauses. We established that the subject of the main clause is different from the subject of the dependant clause. STEP 3: Is there a WEIRDO Verb in the main clause? YES!

  6. SOOO… Io voglio che Franco vada alla festa di Maria Where is the second verb? This verb is in the Present Subjunctive! (YES! It’s the verb in the dependent clause that is the subjunctive verb!)

  7. Let’s look at each of the categories which make up the WEIRDO verbs. The first thing you need to know is that these verbs are found in the main clause. Io voglio che Franco vada alla festa di Maria W These are verbs that express wishing or wanting. The main clause expresses a complete thought. Volere Desiderare Sperare Avere voglia di…

  8. These are impersonal expressions. The subject of these expressions is “it. They must still express doubt, emotion or wishing. I E’ importante E’ probabile } Che… E’ possibile E’ impossibile E’ facile E’ difficile

  17. Il trapassato del congiuntivo Il trapassato del congiuntivo e’ come il Passato Prossimo nella struttura. C’e una piccola differenza, il verbo ausiliare e nell’imperfetto del congiuntivo. E anche come il Passato Prossimo nell’uso dei verbi transitivi (avere) e intransitivi (essere). Questi verbi sono gli stessi nel trapassato del congiuntivo. Potete ancora usare il termine, MRS. VANDERPUVERSCATS, per decidere quali verbi sono coniugati con essere e quali con avere.
