  1. The (SOFIA) NewMUSICDesignBernd VossGSI Helmholtzzentrum fürSchwerionenforschung GmbH Darmstadt, Germany

  2. Motivation & Basic Ideas …and homework • Request: • Replace TUM MUSIC (SOFIA) • Employ fast current amplifiers • Increase accuracy in timing/position determination • Discriminate/avoid projectile charge states • Investigate future FAIR needs and exploit synergies (SFRS) • Challenges: • Improve mechanical & electrical stability & gas-purity • Reduce noise • Improve housing • Push mechanical accuracy in flatness FG/A to O(10µm) • Be very, very fast (in all respect, physically & work-wise) The SFRS/SOFIA MUSIC Design & Layout

  3. General overview • Compact & ‘light-weight’ design, optimized dimensions to fit into the SOFIA & FRS outer: 200 x 240 x 670 mm3 . inner: 120 x 120 x 606 mm3 • ‘en bloque’, EM- & gas-tight • Low- & high-pressure operation • Bubble glasses and markers at all faces for ease of adjustment (done internally & externally) The SFRS/SOFIA MUSIC Design & Layout

  4. Housing • CAD design • Machined (in 2 weeks!!!) with the support of CEA/DAM • after glass-bubble blasting • Protective & conductive coating in progress The SFRS/SOFIA MUSIC Design & Layout

  5. Blind Flange • KF-exhausts for evacuation purpose to ease gas change • Markers to ease levelling & in-beam adjustment The SFRS/SOFIA MUSIC Design & Layout

  6. Panel • Minimized stray capacities (routing- & cable- lengths) • Supports low-& high- pressure operation • Routes all supplies (electrical & fluids) • Carries all Pre-Amps • Screening hood considered The SFRS/SOFIA MUSIC Design & Layout

  7. ‘Functional unit’ The ‘heart’ of the MUSIC • Stiff/rigid design for mechanical precision & shape stability • Optimized electrical contacts for field stability The SFRS/SOFIA MUSIC Design & Layout

  8. Field cage(s) …keep homogeneous fields • 3 identical sections in beam 80(68)x80x190mm3 300-350 V/cm electrical field strength • Stiff walls / flex window design for mechanical stability and best accuracy • 1M strip-strip resistivity (net.) high cross-current max. feed capacity 1mA (?) • Interleaved by stripper foils (not shown here) The SFRS/SOFIA MUSIC Design & Layout

  9. Stripper foil(s) …get rid of contaminants • Get rid of charge states build up within the MUSIC gas-volume • 2 foils (niobium/indium) placed in-between FC-sections • Electrically on Ground potential The SFRS/SOFIA MUSIC Design & Layout

  10. Cathode Plane … keep everything together 190 80 • One thick piece for good flatness & mechanical stability The SFRS/SOFIA MUSIC Design & Layout

  11. Anode Plane … Readout in 2D 80 #2 #3 #1 150 190 • 3 identical sections (#1-3) interleaved by stripper foils • Signal electrodes: 3 pairs/section, 1:9 trapezoidal-shaped, 50mm pitch in beam direction • Screening electrodes: 2 per section at entrance/exit, 20mm width • Base material: 100µm thick, minimized capacity & superior flatness (10µm) The SFRS/SOFIA MUSIC Design & Layout

  12. Assembly … compact • As space-saving as possible • HV-security • Adjustment • Small passive gas volume • Compromises to • Energy & positional resolutions The SFRS/SOFIA MUSIC Design & Layout

  13. Material Budget (‘as designed’, in beam direction) The SFRS/SOFIA MUSIC Design & Layout

  14. HV scheme The SFRS/SOFIA MUSIC Design & Layout

  15. Time Line & Status • 9.3.14 is a most challenging fix-point • Discussions on the HV-scheme esp. the FC resistor-network are ongoing • All material ordered or close to be ordered, external jobs pending and should arrive just-in-time • High precision parts to be done at RBDL • Local machine time ‘reserved’ but in strong competition with other jobs • Assembly work should start 17.02. and last until 03.03. with the help of several students • Lab-testing…? • And for the Twin…? Let’s see…and keep fingers crossed! The SFRS/SOFIA MUSIC Design & Layout

  16. Backup slides

  17. Outline • Recall Requirements • Overall Status Update • Achievements • Problem zones • Housing • Gas • Strip-Line Field-Cage SOFIA TwinMUSIC Status
