  1. Jerome Robins The story of a successful choreographer

  2. Who is Jerome Robins? • Jerome Robbins was a director and choreographer in theater. He directed movies and theater that have gotten many awards. • So how did he do it?….. Lets find out

  3. Who is Jerome Robbins? • Jerome Robbins was born October, 11 1918 in New York City. • Jerome started to show his talent at age 18 and made his fist piece at age 25

  4. Not long after joining the American Ballet Theater Jerome wanted to start choreographing Soon the American Ballet Theater was having financing problems “I got tired of dancing a whole year in boots, bloomers, and a wig. I said ‘Why can’t we dance about American subjects? Why can’t we talk about the way we dance today and how we are now?’” (Jerome Robbins) Why did Jerome become a choreographer?

  5. Why did Jerome become a choreographer? • Jerome’s family owned a Company which had many show business connections, including vaudeville performers and theater owners. • From there on he went to college but dropped out and decided to begin dancing. • He studied at the New Dance League, learning ballet with Ella Daganova, Antony Tudor and Eugene Loring;

  6. What does Jerome think about Dance? •  ''Sorel he saw as a cool, intense foil to Sandor's wildness. 'Her lids never seemed to raise to make a visual connection with her partners, but connected she was. She used her hands in an archaic way, fingers together, thumbs separated and crooked back toward the hand at the last joint. Robbins began to think about hands. He saw also how Sandor gained power by (using) space as if it were a thick volume.' '' Body movement had miraculous expressive possibilities. (jewish-theatre.com par 2 sen. 5-9)

  7. Why Is Jerome important to dance? • Jerome Robbins was always right about a dance. When he tilts a persons head he was right. • Jerome Robbins always “made dance look human”Charlotte d’Amboise • What Charlotte is trying to say is that Jerome choreographs in a type of way that will make the dancer look like they are really in the movie.

  8. West Side Story “Cool” Very strong and sudden Really shows emotion in the characters that they are angry and want to “play it cool” A lot of strong movements You can really tell how the dancers are trying to take their anger and “giving it” to dance. West Side Story “Dance at the Gym” Very Sustained and settle (sometimes) Really shows that they are in a competition and at the same time shows that they are enjoying the dance. A lot of soft tippy toe movements (specialy the girls) Contrast

  9. Both “Cool” and Dance at the Gym” are: Energetic Exiting Have a lot of kicks Have Emotion Choreographed by Jerome Robbins Compare
