SYRACUSE’S LAB COAT RECOMMENDATIONS Below, you will find some of Mr. Syracuse’s recommendations concerning lab coats. As a scientist, a lab coat is not only a useful tool to keep your clothes clean, it is also a bold fashion statement. As such, it is necessary to carefully select your coat for optimum comfort and style. See Mr. Syracuse with any other questions. N.B. – As stated on the syllabus, “A lab coat is not necessary, but is helpful and stylish.” • A belted back is always fashionable, and allows for some size adjustment. • Side slits allow for access to pants pockets when wearing the coat. • For both gentlemen and ladies, the average coat length is about 39’’. Taller individuals may want a 40’’ length or more. • Gentlemen should order a coat based on their suit size. If you do not know your suit size, you can measure yourself. Your suit size is equal to your chest measurement. This is determined by raising your arms, and, using a flexible measuring tape (or a piece of string that you can mark and measure later), measuring around just under the arms and over the shoulder blades, across the fullest area of the chest. • Ladies should order a coat based on their dress size. Please note that ladies’ fashions often have sizes that vary more than mens’ do. Take a moment to look at the manufacturer’s size chart before ordering. • At least three pockets are desirable: Two on the front, and one on the left chest. Some coats have internal pockets, which are also fun. • A polyester and cotton blend is desirable, as it wears well and resists staining more than a pure cotton coat. • Do not order a coat with elastic cuffs on the sleeves. These are designed for applications where wearing rubber gloves is necessary, and are decidedly warmer and unfashionable. • Plastic buttons are preferred over cloth-knot ones, for durability and appearance. • Embroidery is not necessary, but is a nice, aesthetic touch. Names and titles are usually placed on the left chest. • Some places to order… • www.uniformsandscrubs.com is a reputable dealer, offering many styles and manufacturers. They do offer free shipping on orders of six or more coats. Ordering with friends may be economical. • www.allheart.com offers a wide selection as well, and various discounts when multiple items are ordered. • www.uniformdiscount.com also offers a selection of coats. All three companies offer embroidery for an extra charge.
