BNL's Strategy for Science Advancement and Infrastructure Development

BNL is well-positioned for FY2010 and beyond, with well-funded NSLS-II construction and stimulus funds enhancing science and infrastructure projects. The 10-year strategy focuses on applied research and includes five major activities to ensure a balanced portfolio.

Summary • BNL is in good shape as we look toward FY2010 and beyond • NSLS-II construction is well-funded and under way • Stimulus funds advancing science and infrastructure projects • FY2009 and requested FY2010 budgets take us to full operations of RHIC, NSLS, CFN • BNL 10-year strategy presented to the new management in the Office of Science • Five major activities • Balanced portfolio – new emphasis on applied research

Photon Sciences • NSLS evolving to NSLS-II to deliver world-leading synchrotron light source performance (1 nm, 0.1 meV)  qualitative advance in discovery potential energy S&T and many other fields • Joint Photon Sciences Institute (JPSI): intellectual center ⇒ development and application of photon sciences (NYS) • BNL’s core capabilities in • Accelerator Science • Large-Scale User Facilities / Advanced Instrumentation  storage ring with ultra-high brightness, ultra- high flux, and exceptional beam stability • Status: Construction has started, celebration June 15

QCD Matter • RHIC-II and eRHIC ⇒ precision study of new states of matter, including the strong color fields at the heart of ordinary matter • BNL’s core capabilities in • Nuclear Physics • Accelerator Science • Large-Scale User Facilities / Advanced Instrumentation and proven track record at RHIC  continued leadership in this active, international field of fundamental research • Status: • Stimulus funds for AIP, MIE projects  RHIC-II • International EIC advisory committee and BNL Task Force formed • Low-cost power, expansion of RACF

Energy • Address scientific grand challenges in effective use of renewable energy through • improved transmission, conversion, and storage • BNL’s core capabilities in • Condensed Matter Physics and Materials Science • Chemical and Molecular Science & Chemical Engineering • Applied Materials Science and Engineering in conjunction with our NSLS (II), CFN and computational facilities  address DOE/BES key scientific grand challenges • Focus areas: • Catalysis, complex materials, energy storage, and solar • Bridging the basic to applied gap: discovery to deployment • Status: EFRC in Superconductivity, new Science building, 37MW solar power station

Physics of the Universe • Intellectual and technical leadership in four key areas – LHC, Neutrinos, Cosmology, Advanced Accelerator R&D • BNL’s core capabilities in • Particle Physics • Accelerator Science • Large Scale User Facilities / Advanced Instrumentation plus BNL’s vision and current roles will enable continuing leadership in tackling key questions about the structure of the universe: • Dark Matter, Dark Energy, hidden broken symmetries, neutrinos, matter/antimatter asymmetry • Supports P5 focus on 3 frontiers (energy, intensity, cosmology) • Status: Key roles in ATLAS, Daya Bay, DUSEL, LSST

Climate, Environment, Bio- Sciences • Develop near-neutral net carbon solutions in biofuel feedstocks, improved climate models and integrated analysis capabilities that underpin climate change management and national climate change policy • BNL’s core capabilities in • Climate Change Science • Biological Systems Science plus BNL leadership in environmental science, FACE, climate modeling  DOE missions at the intersection of climate, energy and environment • Focus areas: • Impacts of rising T, CO2, and O3 levels; including epigenetic changes in crops • Analysis & policy tools to mitigate the impacts • Sustainable/renewable biological solutions to energy security • Multi-disciplinary approach: plant biology, climate science, energy policy • Status: new organization, new leadership
