  1. Curriculum Design Earthquake WebQuest Team C Jeannie Hensley, Nicole Lipp, and Lindie Schweitzer CUR 558 January 30, 2005

  2. Introduction: An earthquake is caused by a sudden movement of rock in the earth. This process occurs more than a million times each year worldwide. Most of the earthquakes that are produced each year are so weak that they would barely rattle a teacup while others cause great destruction and loss of life.

  3. The Process: You will work together in groups of two . Each person on your team will have a specific job to perform. ·One person is to be the Geologist. That person is to gather data on what earthquakes are and how they form. ·The other person on the team is to be a Historian and Public Awareness Expert. This person is to collect information on past earthquakes that have formed in a location in the United States and also a global Fault System. Also state what the public should do in the event of an earthquake. The following is a list of Internet resources that can be used to complete this project.

  6. Webquest Step 1 In the informational article you will need to include the following information: What is an earthquake and what causes them? How are earthquakes detected? Explain how earthquakes are measured and what is the Richter scale. How long does an earthquake last?  Can an earthquake occur today in the United States? How many people in our classroom have experienced an earthquake?

  7. A Real Earthquake: What is the New Madrid Fault System? Where is it located? When did the Great New Madrid Earthquakes occur? How severe were they? Earthquake Safety: What are safety precautions we should take in our homes? What should a person do in the event of an earthquake when it is actually happening? What is the school earthquake emergency process?

  8. Earthquakes Around the Nation: Can the United States predict an earthquake happening in another part of the world?  Do they have the technology to do so? Are new islands forming under the ocean?  If so, will this make the earth circumference larger and affect the number of hours in a day? Animal Response: Do crickets (who have their babies buried in the earth), chirp during the day when an earthquake is about to happen? What are signs that some animals know an earthquake is about to happen?

  9. Webquest Step 2 In addition to writing the informational article you need to locate the epicenter and determine the magnitude of the earthquake using Virtual Earthquake as part of this Webquest.

Evaluation: Your project will be evaluated on the following criteria: ·Is your informational article clear and concise? ·Did you accurately include all the information requested? ·Are drawings and photographs clear and used appropriately for the subject? ·Did you accurately find the epicenter and determine the magnitude of an earthquake at Virtual Earthquake . ·Did you follow all instructions provided in class about how to write your article? Did you fill out the exit survey assuring all the required parts are included? Webquest Step 3

  11. There are several benefits that you will obtain from this unit. One is that you will gain a more thorough understanding of earthquakes and geology in general. A second benefit is that I hope you will be able to carry out your own research using the Internet to write an informational article.
