    1. Volcano…What is it? Where do they come from?

    2. Different volcanoes are formed differently The Hawaiian Islands are formed from a hot spot in the earth. A hot spot is a crack or opening in the earth’s crust that allows magma to be forced out. When the magma cools new land is formed. Over many years the land builds up and forms the islands that we know are the Hawaiian Island. This is not the only place in the world where this has happened.

    3. Different types of volcanoes There are different types of volcanoes. They are classified based in different characteristics.

    4. Characteristics How fast the lava flows How much pressure is causing the eruption What comes out of the volcano: rocks, lava, gases, dust

    5. Hawaii is called a Shield Volcano This type of volcano has smooth flowing lava with low pressure. There aren’t big rocks coming out of the volcano. There aren’t large amounts of toxic gases coming out of the volcano. The lava has flowed to create the lush, tropical land that we see today.

    6. Now lets look more closely at a Shield volcano http://kids.discovery.com/games/pompeii/pompeii.html We will build a Shield volcano and see how the lava flows to form the Hawaiian Islands.
