    1. 307 Lec 12 1 Bali and the Green Revolution

    2. 307 Lec 12 2 Review Points for the Bali Case

    3. 307 Lec 12 3 Promises and Threats of the Green Revolution We should view the Green Revolution as a new strategy for environmental adaptation. The purpose of the Green Revolution was to feed people and growing populations. It was also to provide surplus to export for countries so they would have cash with which to modernize - develop.

    4. 307 Lec 12 4 Promises and Threats of the Green Revolution It shifted the center of decision making from the local farmer/community to the nation state. From indigenous knowledge developed locally to world knowledge developed by western science.

    5. 307 Lec 12 5 Role of Anthropology Lansing’s interdisciplinary research team documented the traditional adaptations. Their studies argued for the value of an old system over a new system. Perhaps it is most interesting that it took outsiders to describe the functioning of the system – this is a traditional role of anthropology Interesting, it took science of equal standing to argue against the science that supported the Green Revolution.

    6. 307 Lec 12 6 Holistic Perspective Anthropology brings a holistic perspective to studies.

    7. 307 Lec 12 7 Some impacts from the Green Revolution

    8. 307 Lec 12 8 Solutions & Accommodations The national pressure for using chemicals is declining, but not gone. Evidence of coral reef damage has raised a larger trade-off calculation which looks at the impact of Green Revolution on tourism and other sectors of the economy like fisheries. Local knowledge and traditional adaptations are more centered but must now stand along side of western science and developmental bureaucracy.
