Objective 1:Increase Student Achievement • Accomplishments • Increased participation in Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment programs • Advanced Placement • 2005-2006, 1198 students; 2006-2007, 1411 students • Dual Enrollment • 1st semester 2005-2006, 135 students;2006-2007, 317 students • 2nd semester 2005-2006, 62 students; 2006-2007, 283 • Implemented EBR Comprehensive Curriculum and developed benchmark assessments for English Language Arts and Math

Objective 1 (cont.):Increase Student Achievement • Accomplishments (cont.) • Implemented Edusoft student assessment system • Implemented pre-K - 3 Reading Program • 34 reading coaches • 4 coordinators • $800,000 Open Court phonics kits • Increased standards for participation in high school athletics and extra-curricular activities • From 1.5 to 2.0 minimum g.p.a. requirement

Objective 1 (cont.):Increase Student Achievement • Works in Progress • Realigning and enhancing district infrastructure to support intervention in low-performing schools through the creation of Autonomous Schools and reconstitution • Piloting programs to improve the academic performance and behavior of Special Needs Students • Highly Qualified Inclusion Teacher providing instruction to all students labeled “at risk”

  7. Objective 1 (cont.):Increase Student Achievement • Challenges • Locating sources of funding and physical space for universal pre-Kindergarten classes and other instructional needs • Improving the 24 schools in School Improvement Level 2 and deeper • Addressing the needs of over-age students

Objective 2:Promote a safe, caring, and service-oriented culture • Accomplishments • Implemented Second Step in 90% of elementary schools and Too Good for Drugs, in 90% of middle and high schools • Improved the effectiveness of discipline centers through the use of the EBR comprehensive curriculum • Audited for safety by the Attorney General’s Office

Objective 2 (cont.):Promote a safe, caring, and service-oriented culture • Works in Progress • Evaluating the effectiveness of intervention programs: Campus Crime Stoppers, peer mediation, Natural/Peer Helpers, Team Spirit, Second Step, and Too Good for Drugs • Expanding implementation of the parent component of Second Step and Too Good for Drugs • Developing a comprehensive district crisis management and business recovery plan

Objective 2 (cont.):Promote a safe, caring, and service-oriented culture • Challenges • Providing rewards and formal recognition for customer service delivery at schools and within departments • Evaluating the results of customer service improvement efforts • Implementing a professional development strand related to developing cultural proficiency

Objective 3:Improve Communications and Community Engagement • Accomplishments • Hired Director of Communications and Public Information Officer • Redesigned district website • Implemented a bi-monthly Superintendent’s E-mail newsletter • Works in Progress • Developing a district magazine • Challenge • Developing a comprehensive communications/marketing plan

Human Resource Development • Accomplishments • 100% of all required paraprofessionals meet the definition of Highly Qualified • 36% increase from last year in the number of National Board Certified professionals, the largest gain of any other district in Louisiana • Strengthened the Personnel Accountability Plan, which assesses employee performance • Teacher perfect attendance stipend

Human Resource Development (cont.) • Challenges • Offering competitive salaries for employees at all levels • Achieving the target of having 100% of all core academic teachers meeting the definition of Highly Qualified • Improving the rate of teacher retention • Adequate pool of substitute teachers • Recruiting teachers and bus drivers/subs
