  1. Barrel Support Structure and Barrel Integration Preparations Doug Benjamin Duke University HEP

  2. Barrel Support Structure (BSS) • Fabricated in Russia • Components – A side and C side end Frames • Inner cylinder • Outer cylinder (in two halves)

  3. Duke’s Role in BSS assembly • Integral part of small team (6 people – Jack Fowler and DB) • Jack Fowler – one of two engineers • DB – physicist responsible • Verify the BSS assembly Frame • Develop and verify BSS assembly • JF designed inner cylinder flange.

  4. Duke’s Role in BSS assembly (Cont.) • Measure individual BSS components • Analyze the measurement results

  5. Duke’s Role in BSS assembly (Cont.) • Shield the BSS components • Assemble the BSS • Verify the BSS alignment results

  6. Preparations for integration • DB was physicist reponsible for integration • Developed the procedures to be used during integration • Verified the procedures • DB and JF produced a lengthy list of items to be finished before integration. • This list was adopted by an internal review committee on barrel integration readiness

  7. Preparations for integration (cont.) • Prepared the infrastructure require for integration (scolding, gas lines, HV lines, HV software, module protection) • Prepared the modules for integration (Capacitor insertion) • First module permanently installed June 2004 • DB passes responsibility for Barrel integration to Chiho Wang during June 2004 DB could not travel as much (~ 60% of time at CERN) for family reasons.

  8. Conclusions • Duke played a vital role in the BSS assembly • Without efforts of JF and DB BSS assembly and verification would have not happened in a timely manner. • DB and JF made crucial and significant contributions to preparations for the start of integration. This required that both spend large amounts of time at CERN for the past year (> 6 months each). • Excellent preparation for integration has meant that integration has gone smoothly (see Chiho’s talk).
