  1. ETSI Standardization Activities on M2M Communications Presenter: Joachim Koss ETSI Board Member

  2. Highlight of Current Activities (1) • Current work of ETSI M2M is focalized on: • Finalization of ETSI Release 2 (see supplementary slides for current status of deliverables) • Publication of finalized deliverables on application semantic and area networks interworking • Support the transfer to oneM2M of: • ETSI M2M Release 2 specifications • Semantic related studies • Area network interworking studies • Finalizing and extending testing aspect for ETSI M2M specification

  3. Highlight of Current Activities (2) • Current work of ETSI M2M is focalized on (continuation): • Support the European Commission Mandates in M2M and IoT areas; leading and coordinating the ETSI answer to: • Smart Metering (M/441) • Smart Grid (M/490) • Charging of Electrical Vehicles (M/468) On Smart Metering and Smart grids, the work is carried in collaboration with CEN/CENELEC • Developing new studies and tutorials for bridging the applications towards the ETSI M2M specified service layer • Studying the Smart Cities specific M2M needs 3

  4. Highlight of Current Activities (3) • TC ERM TG28 • has specific work items in support of additional spectrum designations for key M2M market segments: • Short Range Device standards essential for efficient capillary network deployment • Work items for wireless smart metering/smart grid systems • enhancing key market standards from IEEE (802.15.4/4g/4e) and TIA (ANSI/TIA-4957) with specific European requirements • ETSI Technical Specifications for PHY Layer (TS 102 887-1, in publication) and MAC sub-layer (TS 102 887-2, expected to be published Q3 2013)

  5. Challenges Disseminate the ETSI M2M solution: Create tutorial and examples to help application developers community to exploit all the flexibilities and advantages of the ETSI M2M specified solution and to appreciate its simplicity and consistency.

  6. Next Steps/Actions • Finalization of ETSI M2M Release 2 specification • Re-chartering and new focus for TC M2M on: • European mandates • Bridging European needs towards oneM2M • Bridging application and services needs towards the communication service layer • New Name: M2M Smart Services System: TC M2M S3 • New studies for the Smart Cities application context

  7. Supplementary Slides

  8. ETSI M2M - major industry events • 23 – 25 Oct 2012: 3rd ETSI M2M Workshop, Mandelieu • More than 260 participants • presenting the progress made on ETSI TC M2M specifications as well as the plans for future developments in M2M standardization • explaining the concepts contained within the M2M standards solution, and offer methodologies for implementing the proposed solution in real life networks • examining the integration of the M2M service platform into existing and future networks • 04 – 05 Dec 2012 Cloud Standards Coordination • ETSI 4th M2M Workshop: 6-7 November 2013, Mandelieu
