Scheffler et al Human Resources for Health 2018;16:5 To deliver essential health services required for the universal health coverage target of the Sustainable Development Goal 3, there will be a need for almost 45 million health workers in 2013 which is projected to reach almost 53 million in 2030 (across 165 countries). This results in a needs-based shortage of almost 17 million in 2013. The demand-based results suggest a projected demand of 80 million health workers by 2030.

Lancet Commission on the future of health in sub-Saharan Africa, 2017 • Investments in higher education and research are essential for better health and sustainable development • Higher education is crucial for development of an adequate and skilled health workforce and increasing health research capacity, and should receive a higher priority in national and regional agendas. • Because of the importance of context in improvement of health and delivery of health services, local research is necessary to identify challenges, set priorities, devise original solutions, and make the best use of scarce resources.

  8. As matters stand, one measure of a university’s prestige is how little teaching is asked of its tenured professors. Although there are more endowed chairs at the top, more undergraduates are now taught by graduate assistants, adjuncts and part-time faculty..

Online Global Learning Defined as “innovative, integrated, global opportunities for capacity building through online learning and shared experiences between and within Low- to Middle-Income Countries and High-Income Countries, in a continuous process that helps health care workers learn as they progress through their careers”.

People’s Open Access Education Initiative: Peoples-uni • Provide Public Health education for those working in low- to middle-income countries who would otherwise not be able to access such education, via e-learning • Utilise a 'social model' of capacity building, with volunteer academic and support staff and Open Educational Resources available through the Internet, using a collaborative approach and modern Information and Communication Technology • Offer this at low cost (to cover infrastructure only) – outside the traditional higher education sector

People’s Open Access Education Initiative: Peoples-uni • Offer education at the 'train the trainers' benchmarked to the Masters degree level, for those with prior educational and occupational experience • Provide education that meets identified competences which help with the evidence based practice of Public Health and are action oriented, to assist in tackling major health problems facing the populations in which the students work • Work with the graduates of the educational programme, and other relevant partner organisations, in teaching, research, implementation of evidence based health policy and advocacy to improve the health of their populations.

  15. Need for a new approach The Global Strategy on Human Resources for Health: Workforce 2030 recognizes the need to boost the global Public Health workforce (World Health Organisation, 2016). Traditional higher education models have proven insufficient and inappropriate to solve the workforce challenge and build capacity, particularly in Low- to Middle-Income Countries (LMICs). The Lancet Commission on Health Professionals for a New Century (Frenk et al., 2010) recommended: “Redesign of professional health education is necessary and timely, in view of the opportunities for mutual learning and joint solutions offered by global interdependence due to acceleration of flows of knowledge, technologies, and financing across borders, and the migration of both professionals and patients” (p. 1923).

We must reduce healthcare's climate footprint, make our health systems more resilient, and most importantly advocate for a fundamental shift in energy, transport and agriculture policies. “ Global Climate and Health Alliance

  17. I think if we are going to reform the world, and make it a better place to live in, the way to do it is not with talk about relationships of a political nature, . ….. Programs of a political nature are important end products of social quality that can be effective only if the underlying structure of social values is right. The social values are right only if the individual values are right. The place to improve the world is first in one’s own heart and head and hands, and then work outward from there. Other people can talk about how to expand the destiny of mankind. I just want to talk about how to fix a motorcycle. I think that what I have to say has more lasting value.
