  1. Levels of Police

  2. Federal Police - RCMP • Formed in 1873 as the North-West Mounted Police. • Provide investigative and protective services to the federal government and serve as provincial police. • Works in the following eight areas: • Customs and Excise • Drug Enforcement • Economic Crime • Federal Policing • Immigration • Proceeds of Crime • Criminal Intelligence • International Liaison and Protective Services

  3. Provincial Police • Have jurisdiction in rural areas and unincorporated areas around the cities. • The largest is the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), • An example of the OPP responsibilities from the Police Services Act • “Providing traffic control on all 400-series and major highways, including those sections that are in the jurisdiction of municiple police forces” • “Providing investigative services, on request, to the coroner’s office and to other provincial ministries”

  4. Municipal Police • Jurisdiction over policing towns and cities throughout Canada. • Funded by the municipality – ie, Fredericton pays for the Fredericton Police. • Typically divided into divisions. The divisions are then divided into squads (bomb squad, homicide squad, etc.) • An officer’s duties may include preserving the peace, assisting victims of crimes, and apprehending criminals.

  5. Aboriginal Police • First Nations Policing Policy is administered by the Department of the Solicitor General. • A partnership among the federal government, provincial/territorial governments, and Aboriginal peoples to develop police services. • Every First Nation community may enter into this partnership • The goal of these police forces are to offer services that are professional and sensitive to the needs of the community. • In NB, the first RCMP detachment consisting of First Nations officers was established in 2000 for the Maliseet First Nation in Tobique.
