Updates: Administrators’ Day Conference (NDE Day) • About 600 administrators attended NDE Day • 30 names were added to our listserv • Shannon/Jane following up with this list • Sarah Dowdy is working with Burwell Elementary Principal to apply for AFHK breakfast grant • Beatrice Public Schools invited me to lead district wellness meeting (September 2) and assist in drafting district wellness policy

  4. Updates: NE AFHK Website • Nebraska Action for Healthy Kids Website • Please submit photos/ success stories • Check out Smart Snacks/ Wellness Policy links and send me additional content • Thank you!

  5. State Team Action Plan • State Summary: All NE students develop the lifelong habits necessary to promote health and learning. NE AFHK achieves this by engaging wellness champions through education, communication, expertise and passion to ultimately influence key decision makers within the school communities and promote healthy school environments. • Primary Audiences: • Administrators • Parents • Elected Officials/ Wellness Champions

School health team trainings By June 2015, recruit, train and activate at least 40 schools in effective best practices for school health teams We can leverage our member organization’s current work by providing technical resources (The Learning Connection) and tracking how many schools we train. Action items: We need to establish a timeline for presentations List of priority schools from DHHS Create post-training survey to measure impact Key Outcome #1

Key Outcome #2 • By June 2015, the team will participate in an existing partner event(s) in a meaningful way (i.e. breakout session, keynote speech, panel, etc.) to raise awareness of the critical need for healthy schools • Action items: • Establish timeline of events • Status= completed/ongoing • Integrate AFHK materials (The Learning Connection/ Wellness Policy Tool) into current member presentations • Status= completed/ ongoing

  8. Every Kid Healthy/ GITA Center • Key Outcome #1: Re-engage existing members and recruit new ones to actively volunteer and spread our policy change messages statewide to target audiences. • Attend conferences to increase visibility • Update website continually • Send out monthly newsletter • Key Outcome #2: Partner with FUTP60 to provide volunteers for Touchdown celebration on or around Every Kid Healthy Week

Communications • Key Outcome 1: The team will participate in at least one advocacy opportunity at the local, state or national level by June 2015 • Action item: Determine advocacy event opportunities and create timeline • Key Outcome 2- The team will submit at least 2 school success stories by June 2015. • Action item: solicit success stories from school in person and on website

  10. Team Infrastructure/ Capacity Building • By June 2015, engage at least 3 new or inactive members in the team’s work through the formation of committees. • Host networking event (lunch after all-member meeting in November). • Modify current steering committee meetings to make better use of members’ time. • Update committee member lists.

  11. Team- Identified Impact Schools feel confident and willing to implement Smart Snacks, breakfast and physical activity into their wellness policy.

Upcoming Conferences • Public Health Association of Nebraska (PHAN) • When: October 8,9 • Where: Grand Island • Cost: $250 for exhibition booth • Deadline: September 19 • Attendance: 125-150 public health professionals • Conference Objective: • to provide public health professionals with the information, skills, and resources to advocate for opportunities to improve public health in their communities.

Upcoming Conferences • Omaha Health Summit • When: October 17 • Deadline: October 3 • Cost for booth: $300 • Cost for individual registration: $89 • Attendance: 165-200 • Speaker RFP was denied • Conference theme: Achieving healthier futures • AFHK objective: awareness, promote smart snacks and wellness policy tool, register school health teams for wellness leadership training

Upcoming Conferences • Nebraska Farm to School Summit • When: October 22 • Where: Aurora, NE • Cost: $20 to attend • AFHK has been invited to present a 5-minute “Ted Talk” style session about who we are and how we can engage parents to advocate for farm to school partnerships through strong wellness committees/ policies

Upcoming Conferences • Nebraska Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (NAHPERD) • When: November 4 • Where: Lincoln • Cost: $175 for booth • I will not be able to attend- volunteers are appreciated! • Conference Theme: The Power of RED – Recreation, Education, Dedication • Still waiting to hear if AFHK can present “The Learning Connection”

Upcoming Conferences • Joint NCEA & UNL Extension Fall Conference • When: November 11-14 • Where: Kearney • More details forthcoming • NASB State Education Conference • When: November 19-20 • Where: LaVista • Cost: $800 for a booth • Audience: 1000 school board members and administrators, representing 250+ NE schools

  18. Conference Booth Our booth display was on loan and has been returned. National AFHK has a smaller tabletop display for approximately $295 + shipping. Hannah is already sending us a tablecloth and stand up banner to go with it.

  19. November Networking Lunch When: November 19th (immediately following all-member meeting) Where: State Office Building Cater lunch? Thank you Holly for reserving space!

Steering Committee/ All-Member Future Meetings • Current All-Member Meeting Dates: • Sept 17 LLF • Nov 19 LLA • January 21 Room B • March 18 Room B • May 20 Room B • In an effort to maximize value of steering committee meetings, should they only be scheduled on an as-needed basis (budget approvals) or continue as a routine meeting? • If so, should we establish a steering committee meeting time that perhaps does not immediately precede the all-member meeting? • All-member meeting time- alternate locations/ times to increase in-person participation? • Currently 3rd Wednesday of the month quarterly from 9-12 • Lancaster County Extension or Health Dept. have been proposed as alternate locations

Committee Objectives • To educate and empower influencers and decision-makers to take action and create healthy school environments • School Health Team Trainings • Providing AFHK resources/messaging to partner organizations doing trainings/ outreach within our target audiences • “Making the case” presentations at conferences and district meetings
