  3. Reports • Have you written lab reports in ESS? • Progress reports for a job? • Introduce reports - Many styles and formats. It’s your job to figure out the best way to do your job within these constraints • Examples from industry, government agencies • Memo progress reports, memo lab reports, open file reports, fact sheets, circulars, special papers, books

Reports • Read memo example from Alley (handout) • What are the important questions that need to be answered in background on the project itself? • What are the goals of the main sections of the body of a progress report? • What is the purpose of the conclusions section? • Does the report have a thesis (or theses)? (report templates)

  5. Reports • Read “Averting surprises” report http://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1995/fs111-95 • How does this report differ from a progress report memo, a scientific article, or a media article? How is this report similar? • What is the “thesis” of the report?

  6. Prospectus • I commented on your thesis statements online • I am available to meet in person or via email to discuss • In class - Meet with group (Ok if you don’t have a copy of prospectus draft.) • How does the introduction “pitch” sound? • Does intro lead to the thesis in a compelling way?
