  2. Program Goals and Project Mission Program Physics Goals • Better understand causes of ST transport and scaling to next step devices 2) Address ST start-up, sustainment and boundary issues Project Mission • Double field and current Upgrade centerstack to enable operations at • Toroidal magnetic field of up to 1 Tesla (presently 0.55 Tesla) • Plasma current up to 2 Mega-amp (presently 1 Mega-amp) 2) Double neutral beam power & more tangential injection Install a second neutral beam line • Beams tangent to radii 130cm, 120cm and 109.4cm • Configure NB1 and NB2 so they can operate together or separately

  3. Progress • Successful technical peer review in June for Neutral Beam #2 • Disassembled TFTR BL4, evaluated hardware • Decontamination underway • Successful technical peer review in August for new Center stack • TF joint design selected August 2009 • Structural Analysis report prepared • Bottoms-up cost and schedule estimate prepared • 2 scenarios prepared cost range determined • Successful Independent CDR October 28-29th • No technical, cost or schedule show stoppers

  4. Progress (continued) • CD-1 Documentation Prepared in compliance with DOE Order 413.3 • Preliminary Project Execution Plan (PPEP) • Acquisition Strategy (design/build by PPPL. Labor =78% of cost) • Risk Registry (no technical show stoppers) • OFES (Lehman) Review December 15th–16th • Successfully addressed all charge questions! • Recommendations • Complete FMEA • Develop a mutually agreed funding profile between OFES Program and the project by January 2, 2010 • Establish project management and technical advisory committees • Review presentations and materials posted at; • http://nstx-upgrade.pppl.gov/Engineering/Reviews/Office_of_Science_Reviews/Lehman_1209/NSTX_LEHMAN1209.html

  5. Plans for 2010 • Update documentation and apply for CD-1 • Submit early January • Receive approval late January • Preliminary Design • FMEA analysis • R&D Activities (joint test, OH braze testing) • Revise GRD for CS • CS and NBI Peer review (1st quarter CY2010) • Update cost and schedule • Project comprehensive PDR June 2010 • Begin critical path activities (requires special approval from DOE) • Purchase TF copper, machining, friction stir welding • Office of science review June 2010 • Apply for CD-2 July 2010 • Begin Final Design after CD-2 approval

  6. General Requirements Documents • General Requirements Documents (GRDs) were generated and approved early in the conceptual design process • One GRD for the centerstack • Another GRD for the second neutral beamline • Design philosophy for the centerstack • Very conservative design (to handle maximum output from power supplies) • Re-evaluating approach by transferring risk from structural supports alone TO a DCPS + supports. No loss in physics capabilities. • Design philosophy for the second neutral beamline (NB2) • Provide a beamline with the same characteristics as the first beamline on NSTX • Assume that internal copper parts need to be re-made until it is proven that they can be sufficiently decontaminated

  7. Centerstack Upgrade Scope

  8. Planned Centerstack R&D Activities FY10

  9. Second Neutral Beam Scope • Disassemble and evaluate an existing TFTR beamline • Decontaminate • Refurbish for reuse • Relocate pump duct, 22 racks and numerous diagnostics to make room in the NSTX Test Cell • Install new port on vacuum vessel to accommodate NB2 • Move NB2 to the NSTX Test Cell • Services being re-configured (power, water, cryo and controls)

  10. NSTX Vessel Modification Required EXISTING CUTOUT ON THE VACUUM VESSEL35”H x 32.3”L 35” EXISTING CUTOUT EXISTING CUTOUT WILL BE EXTENDED AS SHOWN(Approx. 26.5” Longer) Approx 35.1” MODIFIED CUTOUT

  11. Cap/Plug Concept

  12. Neutral Beam #2 Decon underway Lid and cryo panels sitting in new stand

  13. Summary • Technical approach, cost and schedule basis, and management validated by external CDR committee and DOE office of science “Lehman” review. • Project preparing for preliminary design in June 2010 • DOE funding levels will dictate project completion date.
